About us
Tin Shed Ventures™ is Patagonia’s corporate venture capital fund, which we use to invest in environmentally and socially responsible start-up companies. It takes its name from the blacksmith shop where Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard forged pitons, and then made removable hardware that enabled a clean-climbing revolution. That Tin Shed in Ventura, California, still stands alongside our corporate headquarters, as Tin Shed Ventures funds the next generation of responsible businesses.

It’s a privilege to partner with startups like Bureo Inc to reduce our environmental impact while also delivering high performance Patagonia products. Patience is a virtue when it comes to replacing existing supply chains with better ones, but it’s always worth the wait!
When Patagonia’s Tin Shed Ventures first invested in Bureo Inc in 2014, we had a hunch it was going to be big. Ten years later, the California startup has kept over 10 million pounds of discarded plastic fishing nets out of the ocean to be turned into recycled materials for clothing and gear. That’s the equivalent poundage of roughly 283 shipping containers or 2.5 million Chicago deep dish pizzas. Bureo got its start transforming fishing nets into material for skateboards and sunglasses. When we linked arms to help them scale, our product innovation team spent years of R&D with Bureo to develop NetPlus material, a recycled nylon worthy of high-quality products such as our Baggies and Down Sweaters, and recycled HDPE for hat brims. Our goal has always been to develop and strengthen waste-based supply chains so other brands can use them, too. As of 2024, more than 20 brands are using NetPlus. Today we are thrilled to announce Fibe recently closed its £1 million pre-seed investment round with Patagonia's Tin Shed Ventures leading the round and participation from Alante Capital, PDS Ventures and First Imagine! This comes just as we have successfully spun the world’s first yarn from potato harvest waste. A technical milestone nearly two years in the making. We are excited to now shift our efforts to scaling and optimising our technical process with the aim of commercialising potato waste fibres in the coming years.
