From the summer Paris Olympics and Paralympics to the recent WNBA Championship, sports have taken over our feeds lately. 2022 Tory Burch Fellow and Raw Strategy founder Lindsay Yaw Rogers believes athletes have a lot to learn from entrepreneurs. "Whether you're a high-profile star or a lesser-known athlete, thinking like a startup founder can unlock long-term financial stability, emotional fulfillment and career longevity," Rogers wrote for Entrepreneur Media. Rogers points out that athletes already have the "core ingredients of a successful startup," with their talent being their unique product, an engaged audience of fans and sponsors, and market potential with endorsements, partnerships, or post-career ventures. Athletes who can think of their personal brand like a startup can have more success in the long run, by building long-term brand equity, diversifying revenue streams, collaborating and engaging fans and sponsors through storytelling and social media. Your business needs to pay you for your work, "otherwise, it’s called a hobby,” explained financial advisor Sylvia Inks (Moe) during a session of our business webinar program. Here's a preview of seven steps you can take to pay yourself from your small business, even at the earliest stages: 1. Protect Yourself: Part of paying yourself is protecting your and your family’s assets. 2. Set a Budget: Having a clear budget helps you understand where you may be able to save money. 3. Make Sure The Price is Right: Your business is not a big-box store, so don’t attempt to compete with those prices. 4. Get Help: Trying to do it all yourself doesn’t always equal savings in the long run. 5. Cast Your (Cash) Safety Net: Create a cash cushion so that you can pay your owner’s draw and other expenses, even during leaner times. 6. Streamline and Speed Up The Invoicing Process: A smart way to make sure cash is coming in for all the work you do is to incentivize clients to pay ahead of time. 7. Just Do It - Seriously: Make the commitment to pay yourself and stick to it. Dig deeper into how your business can pay you: https://lnkd.in/e5Y9gMwK

It's that time of year. If you haven't started your holiday messaging, get going! “Your greatest advantage as a small business owner this holiday season is that you are a small business owner. You are in tune with your people. You know exactly what to say to them to put a smile on their face, to captivate them, and to move them to action this time of the year," expert brand strategist Amber Williams explained to our community in a session of our business webinar program. Here's a preview of Williams' insights on connecting with customers this season: • First, identify exactly what you want your campaign to actually do. Do you want to build brand awareness? Generate store traffic? • What are your customers looking for beyond your product? Are they looking for confidence? A break from their busy lives? Answer these questions in your storytelling. • Audiences want to see themselves in your story; build your messaging around how your product fits into their lives. • The last component of a successful holiday brand campaign is happiness! Tory Burch Foundation reposted this
I vividly remember the day my mother rushed home to show me her first credit card printed with her name — not my father's. It was 1974, shortly after the Equal Opportunity Act made it possible for women to apply for credit cards, loans, and mortgages in their own name. For more than a decade, banks typically required a male cosigner. Overnight, a credit card became a symbol of women’s financial freedom. Today marks the 50th anniversary of the ECOA, a reminder to celebrate the progress women have made — especially as entrepreneurs — while recognizing the work we still need to do to advance women's equality. I was honored to write this op-ed for TIME's TIME100 Voices vertical, a big thanks to Lucy Feldman for the opportunity. xTory https://lnkd.in/e6cCZGyS
