A well known and much talked about invasive species at the back (Japanese knotweed) and a lesser known but well established one at the front. Petasites fragrans also known as Winter Heliotrope has been a problem in the UK for over 20 years. National Tree Week starts today and runs through to December 1st. It's a week long opportunity to celebrate trees and all the wonderful things that they do. You can find loads of stuff to do either by yourself, with others or at school and other places at the Tree Councils website below https://lnkd.in/esGsbHM5 The tree below was visited by our consultancy manager Neil Davies on a recent trip to Italy. Its a mature plane tree that was partially destroyed by tank fire during world war two. The tree survived and is now protected by the local government for its cultural and historical significance not to mention its great age and size. This tree as also been designated as a sacred Māori site as the souls of fallen Māori soldiers at the site would have gone to the tree. It just goes to show that for so many reasons, trees are far more than they first appear. We've been undertaking vegetation and dangerous tree works on the trunk road estate here in south Wales. Out of shot is an excavator based tree sheer that cuts the tree without leaving the tarmac, it then lays down the cut material in the hard shoulder for the smaller machine to pass along the work area to the whole tree chipper. Woodchip is then blown into our 40 yard ROLO truck and collected for use as biofuel. All works are of course under ecological watching brief. - Minimal negative impact to the habitat being worked - Greatly reduced staff fatigue and exposure to risk - Very efficient use of traffic management reducing impact to road users #trees #vegetation #arboriculture #softestate
