The folks up at Troon Vineyard in Oregon’s Applegate Valley offered their Druid’s White and the new Druid’s Pink wines for review this week. These are lower-priced, everyday drinking options from their certified biodynamic and regenerative organic vineyards. I preferred the white to the rosé but both wines are excellent values. 2023 Troon Vineyard “Druids White” White Blend, Applegate Valley, Southern Oregon, Oregon Palest straw in the glass with a hint of green, this wine smells of green apple, lemon pith, and a hint of star fruit. In the mouth, crisp and bright flavors of green apple and lemon mix with some lemongrass and melon. Chalky minerality and excellent acidity. A blend of 35% Grenache Blanc, 25% Marsanne, 25% Vermentino, and 5% Roussanne. Demeter-certified Biodynamic and Gold Regenerative Organic certified. 12% alcohol. 2023 Troon Vineyard “Druids’s Pink” Rosé Blend, Applegate Valley, Southern Oregon, Oregon Light peachy-gold in the glass, this wine smells of bruised apples, crabapples, and a hint of yogurt. In the mouth, tangy flavors of berries, apples, and citrus peel have a stony freshness to them, with a faint herbal-savory note that lingers in the finish. Decent acidity. A blend of 62% Mourvedre, 18% Grenache, 8% Cinsault, 7% Carignane, and 5% Counoise. The dig out begins! One of our interns, @jordan____gio is seen here scooping out what he can of our amphora fermented Grenache. We have 4 more vessels to go, and so far our excitement is high for this lot! The smell was ethereal, fresh, and so fruity. We can’t wait to see what comes of this!

Troon Vineyard Syrah 2022, Applegate Valley, Oregon. 13.7% alc. Certified biodynamic, native yeasts; 18 months in neutral French oak barrels; unfined and unfiltered — suitable for vegans. 200 cases. Dark ruby-mulberry hue with magenta depths; incredibly deep in loamy, damp earth, flint-like, dusty graphite minerality that gathers foresty elements to its layers — briers and brambles, damp leaves, underbrush; notes of smoked plums, blackberries and currants; then unfurls a bouquet of lavender and violets, new leather, conifers and a rush of raspberry; lithe and supple on the palate, this syrah is animated by bright acidity that plows a furrow through its spiced and macerated black fruit flavors, its primal earthiness, and flows toward a finish subtly wrapped by lean, velvety tannins. Quite a performance from winemaker Nate Wall. Drink now through 2029 to ‘32; it needs braised veal shanks and such. Excellent. About $45.

Grenache, fermented in Amphora ☺️ This year we are fermenting Grenache in amphora along with concrete. The difference in aromatics and taste has been quite interesting to learn during the fermenting stages. This specific lot, we have 3 amphora vessels with whole clusters, and 2 vessels with destemmed fruit. Our last day of harvest 2024! Weeks earlier than normal. Today, we picked late-harvest grenache for a wine to be released five years from now.

Troon Vineyard Druid’s White FOOD & WINE / TROON VINEYARD This is an estate-grown, biodynamic, and Regenerative Organic Certified blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne, Vermentino, and Roussanne from Oregon’s Applegate Valley. The wine is lively and lime-kissed, subtly spicy and herb-flecked, reminiscent of fresh apple cider.
