A long-time Truman member, Tony brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to driving the organization forward into a new era of growth and inclusivity. “An incredible number of talented candidates were considered, but ultimately Tony's rich experience in national security, decades of experience as a leader of people and teams, and deep ties to the Truman community made him the standout choice to lead Truman,” said Chair of Truman Center’s Board of Directors Stephen Bailey, “Tony not only co-founded the TruDiversity Initiative, but he embodies Truman's values. We are excited to see him lead Trumans to a bold future." Tony’s extensive background in national security and public service, including his roles as Special Assistant and Intelligence Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Defense Analyses, and Advisor for Special Operations and Irregular Warfare at the U.S. Department of Defense, makes him the ideal person to lead Truman into the future. We are excited to see Tony continue his advocacy for greater representation in the U.S. foreign and national security policy communities through initiatives like TruDiversity, which he co-founded. Joint Statement from Truman National Security Project and Truman Center The Truman National Security Project and Truman Center for National Policy strongly condemn the attempted assassination of former President Trump and all political violence. We call for a transparent and speedy investigation. As the investigation proceeds, we urge restraint and renewed efforts to bridge ideological divides. We also advise caution in an environment of widespread misinformation and disinformation. Now is a time for healing, not further division or a rush to judgment. Rejecting polarization and violent rhetoric, and embracing unity, is vital to the health of our union and our national security. As Americans, we share a common belief that violence has no place in our electoral system or our democracy.

At #TruCon2024 we honored Tennessee State Representatives Justin Jones and Justin J. Pearson with the Award for Exceptional Moral Courage in Public Service. Last year’s recipient Congressman Jamie Raskin presented the award to Justin J. Pearson at the conference. The two shared the stage to share some inspiring and encouraging words about democracy today while remaining very realistic about the real work that still has to be done. When “War Game” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, the documentary immediately captivated audiences as it explored the very real threat of domestic extremism and hyper-polarization. We were so lucky to have War Game filmmakers and experts on domestic extremism attend this year’s #TruCon2024.
