Arkansas is our Campus
About us
The Division of Agriculture is a separate campus-level entity of the U of Arkansas System. We have faculty at UA-Fayetteville and Arkansas State, as well as the state office of the Cooperative Extension Service in Little Rock. Created by the UA Board of Trustees in 1959, we are the research and outreach arms of the Land Grant mission in Arkansas. The Dale Bumpers College of the Agriculture, Food and Life Sciences is the teaching part of this Land Grant mission and many of our faculty have joint appointments within the Bumpers College. Our mission is this: We strengthen agriculture, communities, and families by connecting trusted research to the adoption of best practices.

I couldn’t be more excited to be a part of the SRMEC team! I look forward to enhancing outreach and technical assistance for producers using federal crop insurance and farm bill programs across the southern region. I also plan to find ways to improve our ability to measure extension impact and scholarship to the institutions we serve our states with. Extension is what sets apart and gives the land grant system its identity. We have an awesome story to tell!
Please help us welcome Dr. Hunter Biram! Biram has been named Associate Center Director, effective June 15. “I am excited to have Dr. Biram join our leadership team,” said Ron Rainey, center director and assistant vice president for the Division of Agriculture. “His appointment allows the center to leverage Hunter’s expertise and experience in policy and crop insurance. SRMEC will be able to enhance the depths of our outreach programs.” Read more from this UADA article by Tracy Courage: https://lnkd.in/gRYqpepq

As misinformation casts its shadow across the landscape of public discourse, “we are potentially entering a golden age of opportunity for the land-grant system,” said John Anderson, new president of the Southern Agricultural Economics Association. Anderson, the new head of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Cooperative Extension Service, was elected to the association post in March 2023. He opened his term as president on Feb. 5, with a speech to his colleagues at the SAEA annual meeting in Atlanta. Anderson spoke about the plague of misinformation, or “fake news.” And while the topic has been a concern to communications professionals and political operatives, Anderson said there is an “increased potential for false or misleading information to gain traction, with adverse consequences, in a decentralized media environment well beyond the political realm. “Universities should view the current moment as a unique opportunity to reassert our traditional role as objective, unbiased arbiters of reliable information,” he said. “We can only do this if our stakeholders do, in fact, consider us to be objective and unbiased.” https://lnkd.in/eUQicEP3

🍺 Did you know U of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture has a nanobrewery? ICYMI "The nanobrewery was installed this year by Lafontaine and is licensed as the University of Arkansas Beverage Development Facility. As a bonded and licensed small brewery with the state of Arkansas, and as a pilot brewing plant with the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, the beer produced on the system can be served on location at special events to those of legal drinking age." Scott Lafontaine is doing some really cool things! #beer #brewery #beerscience #research https://lnkd.in/gh9CpUjH
