Excited for Climate Futures 2024 at Taubman College! This symposium on Oct 17-18 dives into how architecture and urban planning can drive meaningful climate action and shape a sustainable future. Let’s push the boundaries for people and the planet. #ClimateFutures2024 #Sustainability
THIS WEEK: Join us October 17-18 for the Climate Futures Symposium Climate change poses existential risks to the earth’s ecosystems and humanity’s ability to thrive. We need to make systemic change across many sectors–including the ways we plan, develop, design, and construct our built environment, which accounts for a high proportion of emissions. On October 17-18, 2024, the Taubman College of Architecture & Urban Planning at the University of Michigan will host Climate Futures 2024, a symposium exploring the ways architecture and planning can help to bring about a better future for people and the planet. Across two days of moderated presentation panels, speakers will show how urban planners, designers, technologists and architects help to reduce emissions and improve equitable access to healthy and vital built environments. Symposium sessions will challenge the assumptions, interests, practices, and values shaping the current landscape of climate action, and they will open space for inclusive and collaborative imagining of new possibilities. Check out this wave energy research from our very own Jeff Scruggs!
Wave energy is an untapped source of renewable energy, however it lags behind wind and solar energy because engineers can't agree on the best way to capture wave energy. “Everybody knows what a wind turbine looks like because the research community has rallied behind a single idea. For wave energy converters, that’s not the case. When you look at the devices that companies are deploying for their trials, they are nothing like each other. Everybody’s got their own idea about the best way to harvest wave energy,” said CEE professor Jeff Scruggs.
