Advocating for Growth of the U.S. Biochar Industry

About us

The U.S. Biochar Coalition industry trade association unifies the voice of biochar, agriculture, forestry, climate tech, and carbon removal industry stakeholders in advocacy for and development of market, policy, and economic conditions to catalyze biochar industry growth. Our Mission - Advocate for legislative, policy, & regulatory action to build & open markets for the production & use of biochar in the U.S. - Raise federal policy, legislative & regulatory awareness of the benefits of biochar systems & products to break down barriers to growth - Deconstruct silos between the biochar business community & end use market sectors to cross pollinate opportunities for growth - Unite industry leaders, create opportunities for collaboration, build a platform for action Biochar is the solid material obtained from the thermochemical conversion of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment. In addition to biochar’s many agronomic, environmental, electrochemical, and structural benefits, it is a carbon dioxide removal (“CDR”) taskmaster. 1 ton of high temperature biochar placed into a durable sequestration permanently removes 3 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, fixing the CO2 stored in biomass & taking it out of the carbon cycle for millennia. When applied to soils for regenerative agriculture, soil health, landscape restoration, & biodiversity preservation, biochar amplifies its CDR impact by activating and strengthening natural CDR systems. Biochar has immense potential to stimulate innovation & growth of the bioeconomy by reducing the carbon intensity & enhancing the performance of hard to abate products: construction materials, cement, plastics, and more. There is no more powerful climate solution available to us. It is time that all key stakeholders and decision makers in the climate change, agriculture, biodiversity, finance, adaptation, & resiliency ecosystems recognize the value of biochar & step up to rapidly deploy it. We have no time to lose.

  • 🌍 Advocating for a Greener Future: California SB 308 and the Road Ahead 🌱 For the past several months, our colleague Sean Trambley has been tirelessly working to push through a pivotal piece of legislation in the California State Senate—SB 308, the Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act, introduced by Sen. Josh Becker. This bill aims to develop a negative emissions credit market and create strong incentives for technologies like biochar to capture and eliminate carbon emissions. 🔍 What SB 308 Entails: - Establishes the Carbon Dioxide Removal Market Development Act, mandating the Air Resources Board (ARB) to adopt regulations by 2027 that require certain emitting entities to purchase negative emissions credits. - Sets up a certification process for carbon dioxide removal technologies and tracks negative emissions credits. - Includes negative emissions in the state’s net greenhouse gas calculations. 📉 Current Status & Next Steps: In a surprising turn, the California Assembly Appropriations Committee held the bill in committee last week, effectively pausing its progress for this session. However, Sen. Becker has vowed to reintroduce the bill in the next legislative session, and the fight for carbon removal legislation will continue. Recent insights suggest that budgetary concerns and the need for a stronger bill played a role in the bill's delay. With renewed support from the Governor’s Office, we anticipate that SB 308 could be integrated into a broader climate package next year, giving it a better chance for passage. 🤝 Advocacy Efforts: The US Biochar Coalition (USBC), in partnership with the Open Air Collective, has been a strong advocate for this bill. Although this session’s setback is disappointing, it could pave the way for even more robust support for biochar and carbon removal technologies in the future. 🗓️ Lobby Day Success: In the lead-up to the Appropriations Committee hearing, the Open Air Collective organized a Lobby Day in Sacramento. Over 55 industry representatives and advocates held more than 60 meetings with legislators, receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback. This effort underscores the strength of our coalition and our commitment to advancing SB 308. 🌟 Looking Ahead: Sean will continue to represent the USBC in this ongoing campaign, engaging with Sen. Becker, legislators, and other key stakeholders. We are confident that with sustained efforts, we can help push this critical legislation over the finish line next year. Stay tuned for updates, and we look forward to another strong campaign in the months ahead! #SB308 #Biochar #CarbonRemoval #ClimateAction #USBC

This is black gold! Also known as biochar :). It’s one of the most robust carbon removal methods (about 2,000 years). And an amazing soil additive (attracts water and nutrients, stabilises soil pollution). 89% of delivered carbon removal credits are actually biochar! (not carbon capture machines) How is it made? By converting biomass in a pyrolysis machine in absence of oxygen into charcoal. And we just made our first biochar tests!!! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the result! Final properties analysis is in progress. But we are on our way towards more carbon removal and soil restoration! Interested in biochar itself or biochar carbon credits? Give us a shout out C-biotech or Earth Plus! 🤝 More info about biochar and carbon removals in comments below.👇 #sustainability #biochar #soils Frederik Verstraete Ingmar Nopens

😍 🪨 Biochar is beautiful 🪨 😍 💚 Like so many of you, I was in awe of the beautiful Carbon Phoenix, a biochar installation made by talented artisan and environmentalist Benjamin Von Wong in partnership with the social enterprise Wongphai I BIOCHAR I BambooPlus and Planboo in Rachaburi, #Thailand. ✅ This project hits all the right boxes: community-led, raising awareness, economic empowerment, and of course… biochar carbon removal (#BCR). 💡 The giant bird is brought to life using 4 tons of carbon - the carbon footprint of the average person produced every year (mine and likely yours is much higher…). I found this piece of art a captivating and tangible way to capture this message. 📽 We need to create compelling stories and images to expand the crucial message of carbon dioxide removal (#CDR) beyond our bubble. I believe art like this one or films like the upcoming the upcoming #Legion44 and the #BiocharEffect offer other great platforms. ⁉ What do you think? How do we get the message to the wider masses? 📺 Be sure to check out the video of how this beauty came to life here: https://lnkd.in/dnvTyPRH Khomchalat Thongting, Nui Tanthiptham, Teerasak Sirijan, John Bowey, Phoebe Barnard, Pat McDonnell, Leila Conners, Mathew Schmid, Paulina Villalonga Abascal, Fabian Nilsson

  • 🇺🇸 It's not all Presidential campaign drama in Washington, DC after all! While the world focuses on the big changes at the top of the Democratic ticket and the upcoming November election, there’s positive news for biochar in Washington too! 🌱   This month, the House and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Committees each marked up their versions of the bills that, when passed, will fund USDA activities for Fiscal Year 2025.     The House Agriculture Appropriations Bill included $250,000 for biochar research and the Senate bill included ten times that amount - $2.5M. Federal funding for biochar research is needed, welcome, and exciting. But just as important is the language that comes along with this funding. Report language that acknowledges biochar as being a producer of "recalcitrant carbon to soils that can last hundreds to thousands of years, improving carbon sequestration and crop yields" demonstrates a clear government understanding about the vital role biochar plays in decarbonization and farming. Precedent matters in legislation, and we are optimistic that the funding and language here are positive signs for future federal investment in biochar.   The path to finalizing this funding is a winding one complicated by an election-year calendar that will have both the House and Senate in recess more than normal. At USBC, we will express our support for biochar research funding at our September Fly-In, along with other priority policy issues including passage of the Farm Bill. When can you expect the Agriculture Appropriations Bill to pass, ideally with this funding and language included? It could be in the "lame duck" legislative session that follows the November election, and it's possible that passage will drag into the next Congress, once it convenes in January.     If you're interested in reading about the intersection of public policy and the biochar industry, ask us about signing up for our weekly newsletter! #Biochar #Sustainability #ClimateAction #USBiocharCoalition #PublicPolicy #Agriculture #FederalFunding
