Many of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) impact food and agriculture production and are critical for securing sustainable food systems that nourish people, protect the planet and build strong communities into the future: SDG 2: Eliminating hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition, and promoting sustainable agriculture. SDG 3: Ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing for all, at all ages. SDG 12: Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns. SDG 17: Revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development. International organizations like Codex Alimentarius have an important role to play in meeting the SDGs. The U.S. Dairy Export Council is eager to help organizations like Codex make meaningful contributions to global food systems and these SDGs without compromising Codex’s scope and purpose. Last week, I hosted Codex Chairman Steven Wearne for a discussion with the Food Industry Codex Coalition about several topics, including the upcoming Codex leadership transition and the new Codex Strategic Plan 2026-2031. There is broad agreement that Codex standards contribute to meeting certain SDGs, but it should focus on making contributions in its area of expertise—food safety. Codex has several important meetings this fall where issues of importance to the U.S. dairy industry will be considered: stakeholders seeking to embed protections for geographical indications in Codex texts to a discussion paper on the nutritional composition of plant-based foods to possible Codex guidance on sustainability labeling claims. Throughout these discussions, I intend to work with likeminded colleagues to ensure that Codex remains focused on making science-based contributions to the SDGs and that #USDairy is fairly represented in these global dialogues. USDEC, in partnership with Dairy MAX Inc. and the Dallas Cowboys, has launched a three-part U.S. cheese promotion in Monterrey City and Saltillo, Mexico. The first part included sampling and merchandising of U.S. cheeses at 20 HEB stores. For the second part, USDEC, DairyMAX, and the Dallas Cowboys collaborated on in-store interactive promotions in six stores, featuring games, the Cowboys’ mascot Rowdy, and giveaways of Cowboys’ merchandise and “Cheese from the USA” water bottles, cutting boards, and blocks. These promotions began on Aug. 10 and will continue through Sept. 1. The excitement will continue into October with a U.S. cheese recipe contest. Mexican consumers are encouraged to submit a dish featuring a U.S. cheese to enjoy during football matches. The person with the winning recipe will receive an all-expenses-paid trip for two to a Dallas Cowboys game in November.

Our mission at U.S. Dairy Export Council is to provide opportunities for our members and offer good nourishment to global consumers. We’re committed to laying the groundwork to achieve this mission. We put this commitment into action on a recent mission to Kenya, one of many ongoing projects made possible by the Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP). I was proud to lead our team’s exploratory journey to Kenya to gain a deeper understanding of the market opportunities and headwinds in the sub-Saharan African region. Although USDEC is already active in North Africa, East and West African countries present new opportunities for U.S. dairy to improve access to essential nutrition and meet domestic demand. But, as we learned in Kenya, the path forward includes obstacles that we’ll need to work through. The focus of this trip was to build goodwill in the market and ready ourselves to provide strategic advice to members interested in the region. During the trip, we worked closely with the U.S. embassy in Nairobi and: 1.      Engaged a diverse group of dairy and ag authorities that regulate and license Kenyan dairy imports. 2.      Visited local supermarkets and dairy processors to understand regional product demand, availability and market penetration by other dairy exporters. 3.      Explored Kenya’s main port and regional rail terminal to understand region’s logistics infrastructure. Now, we’re looking for ways to build partnerships and harness ongoing U.S. trade talks in Kenya to position U.S. dairy for long term opportunities as the market matures. Today, USDEC Chair and Missouri dairy farmer Alex Peterson had the privilege of meeting with the President of ABRALEITE (the Brazilian Association of Milk Producers), Geraldo Borges. Like Peterson, Borges is a multi-generational dairy farmer and a lifelong advocate for the dairy industry. Together, the two farmers signed a memorandum of understanding between their organizations aimed at fostering cross-continental collaboration. With a shared mission, ABRALEITE and the U.S. Dairy Export Council are committed to promoting dairy consumption and enhancing public awareness of the nutritional benefits of dairy products. This strategic partnership, rooted in common goals, will empower both organizations to share knowledge, align initiatives in key international forums, and drive global trade opportunities. Peterson is shown at left in photo.

In 2023, South America was the 4th-largest market for U.S. dairy exports. This week, a USDEC trade mission is engaging with food companies, retailers and agribusiness leaders in South America in order to gain a greater understanding of the market's buyers and consumers. Participants in the USDEC trade mission are shown below with officials from the Brazilian Association of Cheese Industries. They met Tuesday morning.

During today's meeting with Grupo IMC (Pizza Hut) in Brazil, participants in USDEC's trade mission discussed the important role of cheese in South American diets -- which receives a boost from pizza -- and how U.S. cheese can help in fulfilling that role. In the photo below, the two gentlemen in the front, at left, are from Grupo IMC (Pizza Hut). Standing behind them in a second row, from left, are Pennsylvania dairy farmer and Dairy Management Inc. Chair Marilyn Hershey, USDEC President and CEO Krysta Harden, USDEC Chief Operating Officer Martha Scott P., California dairy farmer and USDEC Vice Chair Rebecca Nyman, USDEC Executive VP of Policy Development Jaime Castaneda and USDEC Senior VP of Sustainability and Multilateral Affairs Nicholas Gardner. In the back, from left, are USDEC VP of Membership Programs and Strategy Luke Waring, Braum’s Ice Cream & Dairy Stores Executive James Deaton and Missouri dairy farmer and USDEC Chair Alex Peterson.

Hats off to Indonesia! At a time when several governments are regrettably moving toward scaling back dairy in their dietary recommendations or public feeding programs, Indonesia is instead charting a course in the right direction and working to increase dairy consumption given its ample nutritional benefits. They're working to launch a visionary school meals and milk program that will yield tremendous benefits for Indonesian children and make meaningful investments in the country's future human capital. USDEC's Jonathan Gardner and I were over there last week to learn more about it and offer to partner with Indonesia to help ensure the program's success. While in Jakarta we were focused on: 1) advancing work on the Indonesia-U.S. Technical Collaboration Project on Dairy - an initiative USDEC's undertaken at our CEO Krysta Harden's direction to support growth and quality enhancements by Indonesian small scale dairy farmers, and 2) exploring how the U.S. dairy industry can best support the launch of the Indonesian school milk program later this year. It was so refreshing to hear the genuine enthusiasm for dairy from the government officials and industry leaders we met with. It's rightfully a very popular plan in Indonesia: In a recent survey of public opinions on President Prabowo-Gibran’s Economic Programs: Nearly half (48.6%) of respondents said the free lunch and milk program is the most desirable program. Indonesia is one of the top 10 dairy export destinations for the U.S. already; the U.S. is a leading supplier of various dairy ingredients to Indonesian dairy and food manufacturing companies. As Indonesia works to meet its expanded dairy needs for this program both domestically and internationally, the U.S. dairy industry is committed to deepening that existing partnership even further. Here's hoping others take a page out of Indonesia's book and prioritize the unique nutrition dairy can provide to kids! #USDairy #USDEC #GlobalDairy
