Representatives from the University of the West Indies - Mona (Jamaica) and the Consul General of Jamaica visited the UAB Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine (HSOM), hosted by the Mary Heersink Institute for Global Health. Our UAB Graduate School & Global Affairs was honored to participate in this important signing ceremony. Alongside HSOM’s Dean, our Graduate School Dean, Vice Provost for International Education, and Chief International Officer, Dr. Shadi Martin shared remarks, signed the Program Agreement, and warmly welcomed these dignitaries to #UAB and Birmingham. #MOU #InternationalPartnerships #GlobalHealth

Today, we welcome the University of the West Indies-Mona (UWI-Mona) in Jamaica, for a Program Agreement signing ceremony between the Heersink School of Medicine and UWI-Mona. This week, UAB is hosting a visit by a delegation from UWI-Mona and a representative of the Government of Jamaica. The visit includes discussions and demonstrations focused on medical education methods in the Heersink School of Medicine (including patient simulation education, student tracking and enrollment, academic support, residency advising, and curriculum mapping) and today’s signing of a Program Agreement that links the Heersink School of Medicine and the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI-Mona. We are excited for the future collaboration ahead!

This week I attended the #51stNOBCChE conference as an Advancing Science Grant recipient from NOBCChE and UAB GSG travel awardee from UAB Graduate School & Global Affairs, where I had the opportunity to share some novel research being conducted in the Kharlampieva Lab at UAB. During this time I was able to connect with my undergraduate research advisor and mentor from Savannah State University who encouraged me to purse my PhD back in 2019. Throughout the week, I made great connections with representatives from 3M, Idaho National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, PPG, The Clorox Company and so many more. I look forward to more opportunities like this!!!

Last week, I had the pleasure of presenting my dissertation research in the preliminary and semifinal rounds of UAB’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition for the 2nd year in a row! Although I didn’t advance to the finals this time, I’m grateful for the experience and the chance to further develop my research communication skills. A big thank you to UAB Graduate School & Global Affairs and the 3MT judges for making this possible. Excited to cheer on the finalists next week!
