Sylvia Marroquin’s public service started in 2020, when she was elected as a city council member for El Centro. It was in this role in the spring of 2021 when Marroquin started to experience chronic pain in her back. Marroquin had a tumor on her right kidney that was pressing against nerves and resulting in shooting pain. Her doctor referred her to UC San Diego Health. Surgery was scheduled with Ithaar Derweesh, MD, professor of urology and radiology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and urologic oncologist at UC San Diego Health - and the tumor was removed. “During my recovery from surgery, I still attended city council meetings and community events. People that knew of my situation would ask why I wasn’t home resting. I would tell them because I wanted to feel normal,” said Marroquin. That normalcy was rattled in early fall of that same year. A follow up scan showed something suspicious. The cancer had returned and spread to her right kidney, liver and lungs. It was Stage IV. “I was determined to fight and win. I immediately started telling myself it was going to be okay. I kept my faith and continued using distractions with work and my family to get me through those initial, difficult days.” To read Marroquin's full story: https://lnkd.in/g8CMYaBv #ElCentro #CancerDiagnosis #CancerCare #MooresCancerCenter #UCSD

What Is Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy (PTE) Surgery? The official answer: Sometimes, chronic blood clots cannot be treated with medication. Without treatment, these clots block off blood flow to the lungs, causing vascular damage and pulmonary hypertension. To remove the clots, surgeons must see clearly into the lungs’ tiny arteries, which requires operating without any blood present. To achieve this, the patient’s body is cooled using a heart-lung machine. Once the body temperature reaches approximately 64 to 68 degrees Fahrenheit, blood flow is stopped and blood volume is drained in a reservoir to create a bloodless surgical field. The surgeon meticulously removes the clots without perforating the paper-thin artery wall. These clots are fibrous white scar tissue, which when arranged on a surgical table, take the shape of the inner branches of the lung’s arteries. The unofficial answer: PTE is one of the many reasons that UC San Diego Health is amazing – both for patients and for employees! We are on the cutting edge of innovation and providing world-leading healthcare . As of July 2024, we have performed more than 5,000 PTE surgeries — more than any other medical center — and have the highest success rate in the world for PTE. We thank Dr. Michael Madani and his team for contributing to UC San Diego Health being a destination health system for patients and employees. #PTE #UCSDHealth #Healthcarejobs

The UC Health Milk Bank, operated by UC San Diego Health, is one of just three milk banks in California. More about the UC Health Milk Bank: https://lnkd.in/e3PAq_sG
Visionary Changemaker – CEO, UC San Diego Health – Combining the power of academic medicine with the accessibility of community health care to bring the most advanced therapies, treatments, and cures to everyone
UC San Diego Health applauds the signing of AB 3059 into law, which greatly increases access to human donor milk to more California families. In 2016, UC San Diego Health opened the first community human milk bank in the region and the first in the UC Health system. In 2020, we expanded to become the UC Health Milk Bank, providing human donor milk at all UC Health locations across the state. This vital resource exists in great part thanks to the innovative work and dedication of Lisa Stellwagen, MD, a UC San Diego Health pediatrician and medical director of the UC Milk Bank. She oversees the medical guidelines for the UC Health Milk Bank and supports large-scale efforts to educate the community on the benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of becoming a human milk donor. Equitable access to human donor milk improves health outcomes for the most vulnerable newborns. Read more about SB 3059 and the essential service human milk banks provide at the link below. https://lnkd.in/giAeWwj7
