After enduring severe, chronic tooth pain, Sacramento resident, Wyatt McThrow, was diagnosed with a rare tumor in his jaw. This led to a groundbreaking and extensive surgical approach performed at Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health. The procedures involved removal of the tumor and the use of 3D printing to rebuild his upper jaw and teeth, while his lower jaw was surgically reconstructed using bone from his leg. "This novel surgery involved a highly advanced case that required extraordinary expertise," said Christopher Reid, MD, plastic surgeon at UC San Diego Health. "The care provided to Wyatt has helped to advance medical care." The surgery was an example of a remarkable interdisciplinary collaboration between UC San Diego Health and the US Navy. "The dental rehabilitation represents a significant milestone in the field and marks one of the first procedures of its kind to be completed in the world," said Daniel Hammer, DDS, maxillofacial surgeon and commander with the U.S. Navy, who pioneered the surgical approach and partnered with physicians at UC San Diego Health. The surgery is part of the world-class care provided to patients at UC San Diego Health that improves quality of life, like Wyatt. "The procedure impacted not only his appearance but also many of the functions that connect us with other people: speaking, eating and facial movement," said Jesse Qualliotine, MD, assistant professor of otolaryngology at UC San Diego School of Medicine and head and neck surgeon at UC San Diego Health. "It was a privilege that we were able to successfully remove the tumor and restore those functions. McThrow is grateful to his medical team and embracing this new chapter in his life. “From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your care and dedication truly saved my life.” #3Dprinting #HealthcareInnovation #Reconstruction #UCSDHealth

A potential treatment for Alzheimer’s will advance toward clinical trials thanks to a new $6.9 million National Institute on Aging (NIA) grant awarded to #UCSDPharmacy's Carlo Ballatore and University of Pennsylvania’s Kurt Brunden. Identified through a joint drug discovery program at UC San Diego and Penn, the drug candidate targets tau, a protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease. No approved therapies that target pathological tau currently exist. "Alzheimer’s is a devastating disease with very few treatment options, so we are eager to advance CNDR-51997 through the drug development process," said Ballatore. "This compound has been designed to combat tau-mediated neurodegeneration and our preclinical data suggest that it could be beneficial for the treatment of Alzheimer's and related dementias." Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences, Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Adjunct Professor of Public Health, UC San Diego
Late last year, UC San Diego Health finalized the acquisition of Alvarado Hospital Medical Center, now known as the East Campus Medical Center at UC San Diego Health. This was a major step in increasing access to care for our community and boosting the capacity of our health system. This 302-bed facility, UC San Diego Health’s first community hospital, offers a state-of-the art emergency department and intensive care unit, eight operating rooms, three gastroenterology suites, two cardiac catheterization labs and recently became re-designated as a stroke and STEMI (heart attack) receiving center for responding ambulances. UC San Diego Health patients in eastern San Diego now have convenient access to routine blood work, radiology, procedures such as cardiac catheterization, and most importantly, emergency care with wait times under 10 minutes. Since the acquisition, emergency department visits have increased by 8%, operating room volumes have risen, and nearly 775 patients have been transferred to the campus from other UC San Diego Health locations. Earlier this summer, we honored this milestone acquisition with a commemorative event at the East Campus Medical Center, which brought together key stakeholders to celebrate this landmark achievement for the region's only academic medical center.
