As we prepare to announce the LEAD 2025 delegates, here is one more LEAD Alumni testimonial from one of our FAVS, Juliah W. Muriuki, PhD. Participating in this amazing program has been one of the biggest highlights of my year—and indeed, my career in the mining sector! The #UCTLEADProgramme consists of two key sections: an intensive week of learning followed by a week at the Mining Indaba. The instructors are exceptionally experienced and knowledgeable about the multifaceted mining sector, both in Africa and globally. Coming from academia, the lessons I learned were incredibly thought-provoking. It was inspiring to see the tangible results of academia and industry working together, which I strive to foster in my role as Head of the Department of Mining, Materials, and Petroleum Engineering at JKUAT. And let’s not forget the incredible networks I built and the amazing people I met! My fellow participants and the #UCTLEAD Alumni community continue to motivate me and reinforce the need for collaboration to build a better Africa. Attending Mining Indaba was a dream come true, connecting with individuals from diverse backgrounds united by a shared passion for mining. Plus, I had the opportunity to attend the exclusive Anglo-American dinner and soak in the beauty of Cape Town. My main takeaway? your voice, though it may feel like a drop in the ocean, contributes to a greater wave of change. Together, we can drive change in Africa’s mining sector. If you’re passionate about making an impact, I encourage you to apply and be part of this transformative journey! #Mining #Leadership #Networking #ChangeMakers #Africa #UCTLEAD Marit Y. How is that #UCTLEAD Application going? Still undecided? Well listen to another testimonial from our own highflying Sephela Makete Thema! ‘’Being part of the LEAD 2024 cohort was a life changing moment, and a great highlight of my career. The program gave me the opportunity to spend two weeks with like-minded young African leaders in the mining sector from ten (10) other countries. The program provided us with insights on the current topical issues in the industry such as ASM, ESG, Sustainability, African Mining Vision, African Agenda 2060 and the role that young leaders in shaping the future of African mining. The second week of the program involved various activities at the Investing in Africa Mining Indaba. On the first day, members of the LEAD 2024 cohort were announced as part of the Top 30 future leaders in African mining and shared the stage with HE President Cyril Ramaphosa. The other activities involved meeting and engaging with various Government officials and mining industry captains. A number of LEAD Alumni facilitated and participated in various sessions throughout the Indaba. One of the great takeaways from the program, are the projects that we have embarked on as the Lead Alumni community that seek to positively impact the future of mining on the continent. Post the program, I have been involved in a number of initiatives and projects that promote sustainability in mining, active participation and meaningful inclusion of the most vulnerable of society and host communities in the mining value chain. I also have participated at the Digitisation in Mining Africa conference, the Career in Mining serminar, and was recently recognized as one of the Unsung Heroes and leading youth in Agriculture, Mining, Sustainability and Environment 2024 by the Sunday Sun newspaper” At LEAD we don’t allow our heroes to go unsung! 😉 #nolongerunsung Are you ready now? The African Union - Economic Development, Trade, Tourism, Industry, Minerals (ETTIM) partnered with Expertise France and Agence Française de Développement under the project “French Facility for Technical Assistance to the African Union – phase III” to finalize the drafting and validation of the African Union’s Model Law on MineralResources Development. The authority to draft the Model Law was derived from the Decision Assembly/AU/Dec.605 (XXVII) on the outcomes of the retreat of the Assembly of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union that was held in July 2016, in Rwanda. The Model Law is expected to provide African governments with specific guidance on establishing and attaining regional standards to increase domestic revenue generation. The importance of creating and adopting model minerals legislation in Africa is to ensure that international investors and mining companies cannot establish terms that are disadvantageous to the country that host the minerals. The Model Law also proposes a strong institutional framework for the regulation and management of the exploitation of mineral resources in Africa. #AUModelLaw #MineralsResourceseDevelopment

The announcement on the #UCTLEADprogramme application process will be released tomorrow! As if you need any more inspiration to apply… Here is another testimonial, this time from the effervescent, ubiquitous, multilayered phenomena Grace Akinyi! #inherownwords “What began as a leap of faith evolved into a defining moment in my career within the mining sector. Young individuals often grapple with self-doubt, questioning the value of their contributions. The Leadership in Extractives and African Development program provided a unique platform for us as emerging leaders to challenge conventional wisdom. I viewed this as a vital opportunity for my future and professional journey, recognizing its significance for my next career phase. Throughout the program, I had the honor of engaging with some of the most brilliant minds influencing the industry. I not only pushed myself to exceed my limits but also gained invaluable insights from the experiences of prominent figures in the mining sector. This experience reshaped my mindset and broadened my outlook on life, highlighting the remarkable diversity within the mining industry and the various ways I could make a meaningful impact. Although the program was brief and intense, every moment was invaluable. I appreciated how industry experts addressed numerous facets of mining, including its future and strategies for adapting to the industry's evolving demands. Gaining insights into the African Mining Vision and observing the industry's trajectory opened my eyes to its evolution and clarified the direction I wish to pursue in my career. A key takeaway for me was the vastness of the industry, where everyone has a role to fulfill—there is a place for each of us, and it is not a uniform experience. - The interactions with peers, opportunities to speak, and networking was transformative. - I had the privilege of taking a photograph with President Ramaphosa, - I participated in an exclusive dinner hosted by Anglo-American, and - I won the #DPI Mining and Innovation Battlefield. Collaborating with some of the most brilliant minds in the industry was a unique opportunity that deepened my understanding and connection to the sector. I didn’t realize that sharing my work with this programme would provide me with a 360-degree perspective on the mining industry. I’ve built a community that I can rely on, which continually inspires me to challenge myself to be better and, in turn, to do better”. Intrigued? Curious? Inspired? Those are the traits we look for in potential participants! WATCH : The African Minerals Development Center, #AMDC , a specialised agency of the African Union, launches the AFRICAN GEMMOLOGICAL AND JEWELLERY CURRICULUM (AGJC) committee. Following the announcement of the launch of the African Gemmological and Jewellery Curriculum (AGJC) committee at AGJEC-Lagos,Dr. Marit Kitaw, Interim Director of the AMDC emphasized on the importance of this initiative as a crucial pathway for Africa. “This initiative ensures that the goals of AGJEC are achieved from the grassroots level, through an African-tailored education in gems and jewellery, in alignment with the 2024 African Union Theme: Educating and Skilling Africa for the 21st Century.” She said. She highlighted that, in line with AMDC's mandate to implement the African Mining Vision (AMV), the center is committed to empowering women in mining through its gemology and jewellery skills initiative. This program provides women with the knowledge and skills to add value to their gemstones, improving their ability to access international markets. Special focus is given to empowering women in artisanal and small-scale mining, ensuring that they play an active role in value creation within Africa's gemstone industry. The curriculum will be made available as soon as the committee completes its work. #StayTuned
