In honor of the 2024 National Hispanic Heritage Month theme, “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future Together,” we would like to showcase Hispanic and Latino colleagues from across our campus. Today’s feature is Juan Carlos Alvarez Rodriguez, a Director of Laboratory Administration. Juan has always enjoyed medicine and been curious about the aspects of what drives clinical decisions. He became interested in laboratory administration during his time of service in the Navy. Early in his military career, he attended the Advanced Laboratory Technician School through the Naval School of Health Sciences, which offered a fast-paced medical laboratory program. Since then, Juan has worked as a laboratory technician in hospitals and clinics of various sizes. He retired from active duty in 2023. Juan was the first in his family to serve a full career in active-duty military service, which created a path for those who would come after him. Being Hispanic, he has overcome language barriers, transforming what could have been an obstacle into a strength by mastering communication skills in a high-pressure environment. He embraced the challenges of military life, adapting to new environments, taking on leadership roles, and making sacrifices, all while representing his family with pride. Through his commitment, he has opened doors of opportunities and inspired future generations to pursue similar aspirations. He’s shown that with determination it’s possible to break barriers and leave a legacy for future generations. He is now proud to have the privilege of working for UF Health and looks forward to continuing to build strong working relationships with our staff.
