A UF College of Dentistry and UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering research team is testing and developing a biosensor capable of detecting cancer through a saliva test. Congratulations to Ashley Zapf, M.D., and Jason Zaremski, M.D., from UF Health! They have been selected as part of the U.S. Soccer Medical Team for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic 🇺🇸⚽. Dr. Zapf will support the team during training camp in South Florida and the early phase of the tournament, while Dr. Zaremski will be on-site from October 17 to 24 to ensure the athletes remain at their best. This prestigious global tournament runs from October 16 to November 3 and brings together the brightest young talents from 16 nations. We wish our doctors and the U.S. team the very best! UF Health has received a $783,570 million funding award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to help improve antibiotic prescribing in children with respiratory tract infections. Led by David Nelson, M.D., this project aims to guide clinicians and parents in choosing the most effective antibiotic treatment for pediatric ear, nose or throat infections while also reducing the risk of side effects. Leighton Elliott, MD, was a biomedical engineer who made a major career change to become a doctor. Today, he is the director of UF Health’s Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program. His clinical practice and research focus on sarcoma, a rare bone cancer that occurs commonly in adolescents and young adults and frequently requires amputation.
