Assistant Professor at University of Florida I Focusing on Patient-Provider Relationship & Value-Based Care Delivery
Our latest study on Genetic Testing Patterns in Cancer Survivors 🧬 supported by UF Health Cancer Center We analyzed the experiences of over 415,000 cancer survivors using cancer registry-linked survey data 📊 🔍 Key Findings: *17% reported undergoing germline genetic testing *8.5% had tumor genetic testing *Only 8.6% discussed tumor testing with healthcare providers 👩⚕️👨⚕️ Significant disparities emerged: *Higher testing rates among survivors under 65, females, college graduates, and those with private insurance *Ovarian and breast cancer survivors showed 7%-36% higher testing prevalence compared to other cancer types *Recent diagnoses (2015-2017) and advanced-stage cancers were associated with more tumor testing discussions 🔬 Why It Matters?: While genetic testing can provide valuable insights for cancer treatment and prevention, our study reveals that its utilization remains low across most cancer types. This underscores the importance of developing strategies to optimize the integration of genetic testing into oncology practice, ensuring that all eligible patients can benefit from these advances in precision medicine. Researchers at the UF Health Cancer Center are conducting innovative clinical trials that aim to improve care for patients with breast cancer. This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we highlight two of our newest clinical studies enrolling patients with breast cancer. One trial, led by UF Health surgical oncologist Lisa Spiguel, M.D., will study a novel method of lymphatic drainage massage, which is routinely performed after lymph node removal to treat postsurgical lymphedema. Another, led by UF Health surgical oncologist Jennifer Fieber, M.D., will evaluate the feasibility of a smoking cessation intervention for women with breast cancer undergoing a mastectomy who are motivated to have reconstruction surgery. UF Health Cancer Center researchers have found that two DNA-damaging compounds may be able to overcome resistance to drugs commonly used to treat patients with advanced-stage prostate cancer. This combination could potentially make up a new treatment approach for patients with this disease, according to the study, published recently in the Nature Portfolio journal Cell Death & Disease and led by Alexander Ishov, Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology in the University of Florida College of Medicine and a member of the UF Health Cancer Center.
