The UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center proudly supported the 2024 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Playmaker grant in collaboration with The Aircast Foundation. Dr. James Voos, a former Playmaker Grant recipient, represented the UH HSIC in Denver, CO, while supporting this impactful initiative. Congratulations to all the winners, including Joshua Bram, MD, from the Hospital for Special Surgery, whose innovative project on determining skeletal age using AI will be supported by the UH Haslam Sports Innovation Center. This grant aims to advance exploratory projects in orthopedic sports medicine. Congratulations to all the winners!

For the first time, the presidents of the major sports leagues' physician’s societies met last week during the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine annual meeting in Denver to discuss common issues and ways to work collaboratively and share best practices. Physician Society Presidents for the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), and National Hockey League (NHL) committed to meet bi-annually to advance health and safety initiatives, foster interest in sports medicine careers, boost collaborative research and support sports medicine physicians' ability to care for athletes.

The UH Drusinsky Sports Medicine Institute was honored to host national experts in regenerative medicine as visiting professors. In collaboration with Case Western Reserve University, our sports medicine specialists are paving the way for advancements in biologic and regenerative medicine. James Bradley, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon from UPMC Sports Medicine and Head Team Physician for the Pittsburgh Steelers, delivered the BETTS Lecture in Regenerative Medicine. Dr. Bradley discussed the use of stem cells and platelet-rich plasma in orthopedics and sports medicine. The Marcus Visiting Professorship at University Hospitals and Case Western Reserve University is given annually by a global leader in orthopedic surgery selected by our graduating chief residents. This year, we were fortunate to have Riley Williams, MD, Orthopedic Surgeon from the Hospital for Special Surgery and Head Team Physician for the Brooklyn Nets and New York Red Bulls, deliver a lecture focused on the evolution of cartilage repair in the knee and the use of regenerative medicine in orthopedics. #sportsmedicine #regenerativemedicine #orthopedics #innovation #cartilagerepair #stemcells

Dr. James Voos and Dr. Bhargavi Maheshwer's study on youth ACL injuries was recently highlighted in USA Today. Their findings, presented at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons annual meeting, shed light on this important issue prevalent in youth sports.
