Internet of Things sensors are inexpensive, and the data can be used to automate processes. In older rolling stock, sensors can unlock modern features without too much engineering change. To increase uptake on the railway, we are carrying out research to provide engineers with guidance on procuring, installing, using, and maintaining IoT sensors.
