So many smiles, stories and memories were shared between caregivers, patients, families and donors. Meet Jemima Amankwah, Nurse Manager at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus. "I became a nurse so I can be an advocate. Being a nurse in Emergency Mental Health (EMH), I feel like I get to do that every day and I love every bit of it. I love being able to put a smile on the faces of individuals who are experiencingtheir worse days. I love making sure that my patients feel heard and seen in adiscipline that is often filled with so much stigma. I am a firm believer in the saying ‘people will forget what you did but not how you made them feel' and I apply that to my daily practice. I preach this in my current role as the manager. One of my favorite days working at UMass Memorial was participating in Slime Day in May 2023 with the Children's Medical Center. I love an opportunity to raise awareness for mental health and this day allowed me to do that. It was truly awesome watching the children laugh and be happy, while parents got to smile and watch their children being children regardless of the circumstance. For me, UMass Memorial has been a space of growth. I started working as a floor nurse in EMH, became the educator and now in my current role as the nurse manager. I have had the opportunity meet and sit at different tables that have greatly impacted my career. Working here, I also feel like I am part of a team that is truly making a difference in the community around us. It sounds cliché, but it is true. I love coming to work because I get to work with an amazing group of people. When I am not working, I am at home playing with my kids. I am proud boy mom and there is lots of fun to be had." Jemima, you make us smile and we're so proud to call you one of our amazing caregivers! #MyUMassMemorialMark

Did you know Stryker Emergency Care’s LUCAS 3 device was developed to provide automated continuous chest compressions for a patient in the event that their heart stops? Studies have shown that using the LUCAS 3 is more effective and offers less interruptions than manual chest compressions by a person. Here’s Nick North, a Flight Nurse with UMass Memorial Medical Center, with more on why we’re so grateful to have this amazing next-level technology available for our patients!

A full-circle moment for UMass Memorial Medical Center’s Justin Precourt!
Last week, I had the distinct honor of being a speaker at Northeastern University Bouvé College of Health Sciences School of Nursing pinning ceremony. Having sat in those same seats 25 years ago, it was humbling to share my nursing journey and the profound impacts it has had on my life and career. As lifelong learners, nurses have the opportunity to travel down so many meaningful paths. I’m wishing all the best to these new nurses who will make massive impacts on patients. Thank you Dean Amanda Choflet for this honor.
