We are excited to host our first UM-IHC Lunch Lecture and Networking Event with Dr. Charles Sneiderman, M.D., Ph.D., on "The History of Health Computing" on Monday, September 30. Attendees can join in person or on Zoom.

UM-IHC welcomed 17 interns to North Bethesda during the summer to create immersive training experiences for health care workers and work on data projects looking at the social determinants of health, using epidemiological data to assess lung diseases, and using artificial intelligence for protein structure modeling. "I always wanted to do research focusing on real-life computer science applications, and the IHC has been the perfect place to get that experience. It taught me that there are a lot of different ways you can use a computer science degree beyond just coding," said intern Arya Palan, a computer science major at the University of Maryland, College Park. AlphaFold, an AI model from Google DeepMind, could revolutionize the development of lifesaving drugs—but it must be paired with a stronger foundation of physics, according to UMD researchers. “This study—and what we are going to do next—represents the best of UM-IHC and IPST,” said Pratyush Tiwary, who leads the therapeutic target discovery research center at the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing. “It’s rigorous scientific computing with practical implications, and all of it’s grounded in statistical mechanics, which IPST has been a leader in for the last several decades.” This study was also co-authored by IPST/UM-IHC postdoctoral associate Xinyu Gu and biophysics Ph.D. student Akashnathan Aranganathan. Adam Porter has been tapped to lead the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) as co-executive director! A professor in the Department of Computer Science, UMD, Adam has 35-plus years of experience in software engineering with an emphasis on algorithmic development. "I think all researchers dream that their work will touch someone in a meaningful way," Adam said. "The work done by UM-IHC holds out the promise of longer, healthier lives for people all around the world. I can’t think of a more exciting and worthwhile challenge."
