Un Mar De Colores

Behind the scenes on my upcoming story! Had so much fun doing this shoot with the talented videographer Carolyne Corelis about a San Diego nonprofit called Un Mar De Colores! Un Mar de Colores, which is centered around teaching kids about surfing as well as about community and the environment, was holding their graduation ceremony for the current set of little surfers. We were up really early and Carolyne even hopped in the water to catch shots of the kids surfing on her GoPro! We both agreed that it made us want to surf too. I definitely learned a lot from this experience, especially on writing a broadcast story in a nonnarrated format (meaning I didn’t end up using the standup, but it looks cool!). Thank you to Un Mar and Mario and Carolyn for working on this story with me!

Un Mar De Colores and The Surfrider Foundation have teamed up to help designate the Tijuana River as one of the Most Endangered Rivers of 2024 by the American Rivers. Every day, millions of gallons of untreated sewage, toxic chemicals, and trash flow through the Tijuana River Watershed and into our coastlines. This environmental injustice most adversely affects Un Mars' communities. We envision a future where we will not have to transport students from the South Bay, specifically Imperial Beach, to beaches in the North of the county in order for them to connect with all the beauty and healing that occurs in clean blue spaces. Although there have been generative plans in place for YEARS, our government has neglected to release the proper funding needed to solve this crisis.
