Dear Union Settlement Community, As we gather in reflection on this solemn anniversary of September 11th, I write to you not only as the President and CEO of Union Settlement but also as someone who has personally felt the profound loss of that day as both of my parents and two additional family members transitioned as a result of the tragic events on 9/11 - this day holds an especially deep and personal meaning for me. Every year, as we honor the memory of those we lost and the heroism of so many, I am reminded of the resilience and strength that arose from such an unimaginable tragedy. In the face of immense pain and loss, our city, our community, and our nation came together to support one another, to rebuild, and to find hope in the midst of darkness. Union Settlement has always embodied that same spirit of unity, compassion, and perseverance, and continues to be a source of strength and support for the people of East Harlem. Today, as we remember the lives lost and the courage shown, let us also reaffirm our commitment to one another and to the work of building a stronger, more connected community. I hold my parents and family, and all those who were impacted by the events of that day, in my heart today. Despite the rain, hundreds of community members came out for the National Night Out in East Harlem! National Night Out, held on the first Tuesday in August, unites millions across the U.S. through block parties, festivals, and activities that foster positive interactions with law enforcement. Union Settlement was honored to receive awards from the NYPD 23rd Precinct and New York State Senator Jose Serrano at the event— a meaningful recognition for both our organization and the community we serve.
