We mourn the many losses and close calls we had this year. In a quest for continuous improvement, the operators are in the best position to review the accidents, training and safe operations as THEY are the ones putting their lives at risk. United Aerial Firefighters Association (UAFA) is working with our members to provide guidance to the agencies who develop the requirements and make the operational decisions so we can minimize and eliminate seasons like this.

In daring flyovers just above the tree line, flying firefighters are battling blazes that have burned 7.8 million acres nationally this season—more than triple last year’s acreage. But sometimes things go wrong. While there is no common thread tying together this summer’s fatal accidents, The number is unusual, according to pilots and industry experts. North America’s fire season is getting longer, hotter and drier. Thank you Eric Niiler and The Wall Street Journal for covering this important topic that the public doesn't often hear about. Here is what a good friend told me a few weeks ago: "Oh man, I can’t sum this up right now. But I was on the Bridge Fire and was blown away at the lack of support, the emptiness of the air Ops maps, and we never had a Helco (helicopter coordinator) copter up the whole time I was there. We had a few unsafe situations and mitigated them ourselves, but none of this should’ve happened, and would not have happened if it was a county or state run fire." #wildfire Stu Sprung Dan Reese Kelly Martin Maxwell Brodie Kim Zagaris Christopher Anthony Daniel Berlant Baraka Carter, CFO Wade White Eddie Sell Justice Jones Angie Gibson Todd Tuggle Frank Frievalt Dorothea (Dede) Smullen Anale Burlew Laura Blaul Paul Petersen

Smart tech to the rescue? 🛰️💻🛜🧐 The U.S. military has deployed the Maven Smart System to assist in disaster response efforts following Hurricane Helene. This advanced data analytics tool is helping emergency responders identify critical areas in need of aid and ensuring resources are efficiently distributed. The system provides real-time information on road closures, cellular outages, and supply needs, enabling quick and effective decision-making. A great example of technology making a difference in times of crisis! 💪🚁 Now if we could only get our land management agencies to use the similar tech that has already been developed for wildfire prevention, initial attack, suppression and recovery. ❓What will it take for the change to occur? Another catastrophe? Our UAFA members and partners stand ready to assist, USDA Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management just need to ask! #DisasterResponse #wildfires OroraTech Cirro by AirSuite Resolute ISR TracPlus Watch Duty Wildfire Industry Collective USDA U.S. Department of the Interior U.S. Fire Administration FEMA https://lnkd.in/eT-7M4Bq

Paul and I are on the Hill today talking about our ideas to meet almost 20 of the Wildland Fire Mitigation and Management Commission recommendations for contracting private industry to support our land agencies. We are hearing nothing but positive support from both chambers and parties! Come to our annual members meeting in Boise in November to hear more about it and influence the language. Thanks to the Western Caucus Foundation for allowing us to be on the Wildfire Panel to discuss the challenges private industry has in providing support to the agencies. Some of the topics we detailed include: 1. Challenging contract terms and demand signals that impact investment and retention. 2. Contracts which do not reflect the increased inflation over the past 5 years. 3. Desire to be seen as a partner to agencies in operations, training and planning. #UAFA is working to make improvements in all of these areas and more by talking to agencies, Congress and industry.
