About us
The U.S. Copyright Office is a critical part of the country’s extraordinary copyright system, tasked with the important mission of administering U.S. copyright law. The Office examines works of authorship for registration; records transfers of ownership for copyright claims; administers several statutory licenses; provides the public with copyright information and education; conducts legal and policy studies; and assists Congress, the courts, and other governmental entities. Through all of this work, the U.S. Copyright Office continues to “promote the progress of science ... by securing for limited times to authors ... the exclusive right to their respective writings” as envisioned by the U.S. Constitution.
