Brussels Airport, in collaboration with Stargate - EU Green Deal partners VIL and DHL, is piloting a hydrogen refueling station and a hydrogen-powered MULAG towing tractor for ground handling operations. This initiative aims to explore hydrogen as a sustainable alternative to conventional fuels and electric equipment, reducing emissions and noise. The project, part of the broader Stargate initiative, includes a mobile hydrogen refueling station and a hydrogen fuel cell system for cargo transport. Comprehensive training ensures safe and efficient operations. Running until June 27th, the pilot will evaluate hydrogen's viability for ground handling and share insights with other airports. Hydrogen vehicles produce no CO2 emissions, operate quietly, and can be refueled instantly, offering significant operational advantages. This pilot is a step towards the broader adoption of hydrogen technology in aviation, promoting a more sustainable future. The National Petroleum Council (NPC) recently published a comprehensive report on low-carbon hydrogen, highlighting its potential to significantly reduce emissions with the right support. The report, produced by a diverse group including industry, academia, and NGOs, emphasizes that low-carbon hydrogen can be crucial for heavy industry, commercial transportation, and power generation. Key findings indicate that hydrogen could remove 8% of total U.S. emissions by 2050, supporting economic growth and energy security. However, achieving this requires nearly $2 trillion in investment and extensive infrastructure development. The report recommends policies to incentivize both hydrogen demand and production, including extending the IRA’s 45V tax credit. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm called the findings “sobering,” stressing the immense effort needed to expand the U.S. hydrogen market. The NPC report's recommendations aim to guide this growth and ensure hydrogen plays a central role in the U.S. achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
