Building More Equitable Communities, Together
About us
United Way of Massachusetts Bay exists to build more equitable communities, together. With over 85 years of local impact in eastern Massachusetts, we work with and for our communities to build economic prosperity and enable everyone–across races and ethnicities–to share in the knowledge, wealth and resources available. We believe that the key to unlocking opportunity is uniting people, and we bring together individuals, community leaders, corporate partners, legislators and organizations to build a powerful engine of change. We fuel new ideas, develop programs and take innovative approaches to solve some of the region’s most entrenched and systemic inequities. With communities at the center of everything we do, we unlock avenues of prosperity that uplift those who have been marginalized, and create opportunity. We believe in the possibility of vibrant, abundant, prosperous, healthy and equitable future through the power of the united collective. "This is a model that needs to be lifted up!" Massachusetts Executive Office of Education Secretary and DESE Commissioner Patrick Tutwiler, PhD toured the Nettle Middle in Haverhill this week to see the innovative Community Schools strategy in action. From visiting the student-run food and resource center, to listening to the presentations from students training to be docents for the city's historical spaces, to meeting Community Schools liaisons, students and parents, the visit showed the value of Community Schools as a nationally recognized equity strategy that organizes resources of the local community to accelerate academic and social outcomes for students. Other dignitaries attending the event included State Representatives Andy Vargas and Ryan Hamilton, Haverhill School Superintendent Margaret Marotta Smith , Haverhill School Committee member Thomas Grannemann, Marty Martinez, the new President and CEO at United Way of Massachusetts Bay, Haverhill Education Association President Barry Davis and YMCA Regional Executive Director Tracy Fuller. United Way of Massachusetts Bay has launched a Community Schools movement across the state in partnership with nonprofit, government, labor, and philanthropic organizations. Boston, Haverhill, Lowell, Lynn, and Salem have adopted the Community Schools strategy with demonstrated positive student outcomes.
