Breast cancer is close to Amanda Wilber's heart. In fact, it's why she chose the career path she did. Her mother and sister are both survivors. Fourteen years ago, Amanda started her career in medical imaging. Her goal was to work in mammography due to her personal connection. Three years ago, she made it happen. “I love working with women to help them feel at ease and as comfortable as possible during their exam,” she says. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Amanda emphasizes the importance of early detection. “A routine screening mammogram is the best way to catch breast cancer early, when it’s most treatable. I encourage everyone to take control of their health and schedule their screening,' she says. Talk to your doctor about the right time to screen based on your age and family history. https://lnkd.in/gekwn7YU

Get the tissues out for this incredible rainbow baby story. 🌈 Rachel, a labor and delivery nurse at one of our Des Moines hospitals, is a DAISY Award winner. In 2022, Rachel came into her nominating family's life when they were expecting their first baby. Mom says, "Unfortunately, we had complications, and I had to deliver my baby knowing he wouldn’t make it. When Rachel came in, we instantly felt comfort. She knew the right words to say and answered every question we had. She took her time to make sure I had everything I needed to be comfortable in such a hard situation. In between all the heart break, she reminded me how strong I am and gave me a safe space to express what I was feeling." Two years later, another baby boy was on the way. Mom was, once again, admitted to the hospital for complications. Understandably, her anxiety was sky high due to her last experience. However, a comforting presence reentered her journey. "We had Rachel again as our nurse. Our rainbow baby was born, and I was so happy she was part of this journey with us. She's an angel on earth. I'll never forget how she cared for me and my beautiful baby boy the first time and how she talked to him like any other baby, and now, meeting my second baby and seeing how happy she was for us. It was truly a full circle moment, and I am forever grateful.” Join a team who cares: https://lnkd.in/enjJQFYK

Meet some of the team members in our Unidos CommUNITY Network. One of our employee resource groups, more than 50 members help to uplift and celebrate Hispanic/Latino culture within our health system and communities. To date, the group has brought Spanish menus to our hospitals for Spanish-speaking patients, added Spanish channels to patient care programs and hosted a minority-owned vendor fair. Dr. Paul Hick has been an ER physician for 22 years and is particularly passionate about spreading sepsis awareness. He knows timely intervention can save lives by preventing infections from progressing into septic shock and wants everyone to know the signs of sepsis. When it comes to sepsis, Dr. Hick wants you to think T.I.M.E.: - Temperature is higher or lower than normal - Infection signs - Mental decline or confusion - Extremely ill with severe abdominal pain or shortness of breath More than 1.7 million people are diagnosed with sepsis each year but as many as 80% of sepsis deaths can be prevented with early intervention. UnityPoint Health cares for more than 10,000 patients with sepsis each year. In 2023, we formed a multi-disciplinary group of clinicians who collaborate to improve sepsis care using national and proprietary data and evidence. The team designed several treatment plan improvements that have since saved more lives and reduced hospital stay length for patients with sepsis. Dr. Hick has dedicated his career to emergency care, and he calls everyone to join him this month in learning more about sepsis to protect yourself and your loved ones. #SepsisAwarenessMonth #SAM2024
