“Strokes typically are sudden and can turn your world upside down,” said Arlene Kennedy, a dedicated Speech Language Pathologist at UnityPoint Health – Meriter, “I love working with patients and their families to set goals for recovery, work toward their goals, celebrate each step of recovery and help them navigate all the emotions that come with medical events.” For nearly two decades, Arlene Kennedy has been helping individuals regain their speech and swallowing abilities following a stroke, brain injury or neurologic event. Since 2010, she has been a cornerstone of the Madison Area Stroke and Brain Aneurysm Support Group. Each time the group meets, Arlene is amazed by the resilience, perseverance, honesty, compassion and encouragement of stroke survivors and their families. Arlene is deeply committed to creating a safe space for everyone to share raw emotions and restore hope. Often, families come to Arlene having heard that stroke recovery will take 3-6 months. While significant recovery does happen in that time frame, Arlene emphasizes that the road to recovery for some people may take years or even decades. She is continually moved by the strength and unwavering hope her patients display; that’s what drives her passion for her work every day. Through her work in the NICU, specializing in infant feeding and swallowing, and her leadership in the support group, Arlene continues to make a profound impact on the lives of those she works with, offering not just professional expertise but support and hope.
