  • Congrats to Cancer Center members Chenran Wang, PhD, Amanda Wasylishen, PhD, Yanbo Fan, MD, PhD, and Ady Kendler, MD, PhD, on their new publication! Their research introduces a novel 3D co-culture platform using human cerebral organoids to model breast cancer brain metastasis. This innovative approach has revealed that certain breast cancer cells, like MDA-MB-231 and SUM159PT, can invade and form colonies in the brain, advancing our understanding of the tumor microenvironment and potentially leading to more effective therapies for patients. • At the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center, our Cancer Research Scholars Program (CRSP) offers a unique opportunity for students to gain hands-on experience in cancer research and community engagement. This year, 21 exceptional scholars were selected from over 500 applicants. Today, we want to highlight three of these outstanding students. Sarah Jewell, a 4th-year biomedical sciences major at UC, works in Dr. John Byrd's Leukemia Drug and Development Lab, assisting Dr. Anusha Anukanth with research on enhancing the effect of natural killer cells on tumor cells. Sarah has been recognized for her exceptional bedside manner. Joe Abou-Khalil, a 2nd-year Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology student at Yale University, is conducting research in Dr. Nives Zimmermann's lab on the impact of white blood cells on the cardiovascular system. Joe has enjoyed learning about different communities in his hometown and has been complimented on his strong work ethic and flexibility. Kiersten Tucker, a 3rd-year Biology Pre-medicine student at Hampton University, is investigating innovative cancer therapies with Dr. Nalinikanth Kotagiri at the UC James L. Winkle College of Pharmacy. Passionate about cardiovascular health and oncology, Kiersten is a valuable addition due to her personable and adaptable nature. These CRSP students are actively participating in the Hamilton County 513Relief Bus, which provides essential health screenings and social services to residents. This initiative aligns with our goal to reduce health disparities and improve outcomes in our community. Join us in celebrating the achievements of these students and their contributions to advancing cancer research and community health. #CancerResearch #513ReliefBus
