The Achievement & Assessment Institute at KU awarded the 2024 AAI Art & Humanities Grant to Sarah Jen, associate professor in the School of Social Welfare, and Liz Langdon, a lecturer in the Department of Visual Art, for their project, “Untold Stories of Aging in Action – Revealed and Traveled.” “There's a lot of research that says that when folks can imagine what they want for their futures, they're more planful in making it happen, but we don't often give older adults the experience to think of what comes next,” Jen said. “I think societally we tend to think of later life as like this one homogenous experience where once you’re 65 or older, it's all the same after that. Nine researchers from across the KC region will participate in a 6-month KU Innovation Park program to drive their discoveries from the lab to the marketplace. The cohort receives benefits like access to dedicated space at KU Innovation Park, free business services, monthly sessions on relevant topics, access to a community of innovators and more. The program is funded by a Build to Scale grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration. KU researchers found most U.S. infant formulas primarily contain added sugars rather than the healthier, naturally occurring lactose found in cow-milk base. Audrey Rips-Goodwin, an undergraduate student at The University of Kansas, completed the study with Tera Fazzino, associate professor of psychology & associate director of the KU Life Span Institute's Cofrin Logan Center for Addiction Research & Treatment. A grant from the Kansas Idea Network of Biomedical Research Excellence, an initiative funded by The National Institutes of Health to invigorate biomedical research in Kansas, supported Rips-Goodwin's work.
