📢 UN International Conference on Victims of Terrorism Over 400 participants, including 66 Member States, 59 victims of terrorism and victims' associations and UN representatives gathered to discuss the role of victims and survivors of terrorism as educators, peacebuilders and agents for change. The two-day discussions covered ways in which the international community, Member States, victims’ associations, and victims and survivors can help to educate and sensitize new generations about the impact of terrorism, contributing to fostering empathy and solidarity with victims and nurturing a culture of peace and resilience. Additionally, the conference explores how Member States and civil society organizations can best support the needs and uphold the rights of victims of terrorism and promote inclusivity, tolerance, and social cohesion in communities affected by terrorism. Co-organized by the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT) and Government of Spain in Ayuntamiento de Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain. More information: bit.ly/VoTConference2024

The spread of hatred and lies online is causing grave harm to people and communities around the world. Opaque algorithms push people into information bubbles and reinforce prejudices including racism, misogyny and discrimination of all kinds. Today, I presented a starting point for solutions: The United Nations Global Principles for Information Integrity include: - societal trust and resilience; - healthy incentives; - public empowerment; - independent, free, and pluralistic media; - transparency and research. Everyone should be able to express themselves freely without fear of attack. Everyone should be able to access a range of views and information sources. I urge governments, the tech sector, public relations companies and advertisers to listen to their people and their customers – and respond.
