Today saw the launch of “Assembly for Peace: A Digital Handbook on the UN General Assembly's Past Practice on Peace and Security”, produced by UNU-CPR for the Office of the President of the General Assembly, United Nations. UNU-CPR Director David Passarelli addressed Member States on behalf of the Handbook research team (Erica Gaston, Adam Day (he/him), Sophie Buddenhorn, Emma Bapt, Imane Karimou, Catharina Nickel). His intervention drew attention to the General Assembly’s significant role in peace and security over the past eight decades—from upholding Charter values to innovating many of the practices associated with maintaining peace and security today. The General Assembly was the first to authorize a UN peacekeeping mission; and has set important precedents on sanctions and good offices. Despite these contributions, much of the General Assembly’s practice remains relatively unknown, or difficult to access, a gap this new Handbook aims to address by offering a user-friendly guide to past initiatives and actions. Addressing Member States, UN bodies and the President of the General Assembly, David Passarelli stated, “I encourage you to view this Handbook not just as a reference guide to past practice, but as a catalyst for action—a guide to the Assembly’s role in addressing global security issues more effectively.” With the Summit of the Future and the 79th session of the General Assembly taking place this month, now is a pivotal moment to leverage the Assembly’s authority in addressing global challenges effectively.
