    Community Manager at Uplift Games

This is the kind of company Uplift Games are: When I had just started working here, (I had been here around 2 weeks) I found out I was pregnant. It was a shock and I was TERRIFIED to tell my boss, as I knew I didn't want to lose my job. I remember having heart palpitations whilst in the meeting, I imagined being told that they would have to let me go, after all, I was still in my probationary period, I wouldn't have blamed them, Instead...what I got was acceptance, acknowledgment, careful planning, and opportunity. I was congratulated, assured that my job was secure, that they were more excited about what I could provide to the company on a long-term basis, that they were incredibly happy with my work so far, and were excited to see how far I could go. That one conversation changed my entire outlook on how the world should be for women who decide to have a family...Someone in their probationary period was encouraged and accepted and allowed to continue their pregnancy, without fear that they would be jobless at the end of it. It was an incredible weight off of my shoulders. The fact they looked at me as a person, and not simply as a number and weighed up what I could give to them, that they wrote and altered policies so they could give, not only me, but future pregnant people the ability to start their own families, that they listened and checked in and made sure that I was ok, every single step of the way. Is a testament to the company and the people working there. My boss said to me 'Your maternity is a time for family and adjustment, and I will actively block you whilst you are on maternity if I find out you are working' 🤣 This is a company of the future and a company I am proud to work for. A company that provides not only amazing games and community for their players, but also an amazing community for their staff members. I go on Maternity on Friday, and I cannot stress how much easier it has been made for me because of my colleagues at Uplift Games. I hope many other companies take their lead and show that Family does not need to take a backseat. #family #maternity #community #maternityleave #acompanytobeproudof #thankyou

How wonderful to see Adopt Me being used as an educational tool! While gaming is a form of entertainment, it has been shown that playing games can aid cognitive development, encourage creativity, and foster emotional and social learning 😊

I really like this clip of Joanna Lovejoy speaking with me about the practicalities of using Roblox games like Adopt Me! in the classroom, using her experience at Alpha School and Kinjo. 🐣You may know Adopt Me! as this cute little game that younger people play, and not take it too seriously. 📈 But in reality it's most of the most popular video games in the world. It's the #2 most popular Roblox game, with over 35 billion (yes, billion) visits. And it's topped out at almost 2 million CCU (concurrent users). So let's look at this wildly popular game a bit deeper and see how it might be used in or out of the classroom, using Joanna's helpful remarks to guide us. 🍼 Adopt Me! revolves around adopting and caring for a variety of different types of pets, which hatch from eggs. Specific eggs hatch different pets that can be raised from their starting status as newborns, growing up into juniors, pre-teens, teens, post-teens, and eventually becoming full-grown. 🥚Pets are grouped into five classes based on rarity and cost: common, uncommon, rare, ultra-rare, and legendary. Players can also adopt children and roleplay with other users. ✏️ While Adopt Me! is primarily an entertainment-focused game, there are some potential learning affordances that could be explored in a classroom setting: 💵 Resource Management: Players need to manage their in-game currency (bucks) and make decisions about how to spend them on pet care, accessories, and other items. This could be used to teach basic financial literacy and budgeting skills. 🗣️ Socialization and Communication: Adopt Me! encourages players to interact with each other through trading, role-playing, and chatting. This could help students develop social skills, negotiation tactics, and digital communication etiquette. 🎨 Creativity and Customization: Players can customize their avatars and homes, which could inspire discussions about self-expression, design principles, and digital art. 🐶 Pet Care and Responsibility: The game revolves around adopting and caring for virtual pets, which might help teach children about the responsibilities of pet ownership and the importance of caring for living creatures (albeit in a simplified, virtual context). 🥇 Goal Setting and Achievement: Players can set goals for themselves within the game, such as saving up for a particular pet or item, and work towards achieving those goals. This could be used to discuss the importance of setting realistic goals and persevering to reach them. 🙋🏻♀️ Digital Citizenship: As with any online multiplayer game, Adopt Me! could provide opportunities to discuss digital citizenship, online safety, and how to interact respectfully with others in virtual environments. While these learning affordances may be secondary to the game's primary focus on entertainment, they could potentially be leveraged by creative educators to spark discussions and teach various skills in a classroom setting.
