Diversifying the C-Suite & Co-Creating Anti-Oppressive Cultures @ Uproot Talent | Workshop Facilitator | Job board for underrepresented talent is now live!

Meet my mom, Rosa. She's been a school bus driver for over 30 years and absolutely loves her job. Her school district adopted a fleet electrification plan and has been educating their drivers on the transition process. Love to hear it! As a kid who grew up right under the LAX flight path and only two blocks from the busiest freeway in the U.S. -- we didn't fully understand the harm and environmental racism we were experiencing. I'm glad Uproot Talent now gets to partner with organizations like Climate Solutions (#changingpolicy) and the Breaking Barriers Collaborative -- an initiative to decarbonize fleets across Washington. ➡️ They're hiring a #FleetElectrification Program Manager to lead their programs and Fleet Decarbonization Accelerator ⬅️ IS THIS YOU? Please reach out to Melanie P. with questions. 📌 The application deadline is next week, on March 5. 📌 Location: Seattle, WA 📌 Learn more: https://bit.ly/bbc-pm-app (Ps: they’re also hiring a Washington State Director 👀) #nowhiring #climatejustice #environmentaljustice

  • Week 2 of #TalentIsForEveryone: Bias in Interviews 🌿 Bias doesn’t just show up—it shapes decisions, influences hiring outcomes, and keeps systems of exclusion in place. This week, we’re breaking down Affinity Bias and Confirmation Bias, two biases that often unconciously and consciously show up in our hiring decision-making. 🔍 Affinity Bias happens when we gravitate toward candidates who remind us of ourselves—same school, similar hobbies, same background. This looks and interviewer discovering that a candidate attended the same college or enjoys the same sports team and spends a significant portion of the interview discussing these shared interests. This can also look like an interviewer favoring a candidate who speaks in a similar tone, uses similar language, or has a comparable personality (e.g., extroverted, assertive). The Impact: The interviewer may rate the candidate more favorably, even if their qualifications are not as strong as strong as the other candidates. 🔍 Confirmation Bias happens when we make a snap judgment about a candidate early on and then only see what confirms that belief—ignoring anything that challenges it. This looks like seeking information that aligns with initial assumptions made about the candidate. For example, an interviewer assumes that candidates from certain schools or companies are more competent and only asks questions that confirm this belief. The Impact: Candidates with unique or non-traditional career paths may be undervalued, even if they bring diverse perspectives and skills -- like lived-experience and strong cultural capital. 💡 So what can we do? 📌 Structured Interviews: Use standardized questions and evaluation criteria for all candidates. This means you ask the same questions to all candidates, and work towards creating similar conditions for all (e.g., same interviewers for all, interviews all take place in the morning vs. late evening).  📌 Create a Search Committee: Create a committee that is representative of the diverse experiences and perspectives of your team -- include folks who will work with the future hire in different capacities.  📌 Develop a Scorecard: The Scorecard (rubric) is the blueprint for the search and keeps the search committee honest and evidence-based. 1) Faciliate listen & learn conversations with key stakeholders and staff who will be working alongside the new hire. 2) Seek to better understand what the new hire will need to achieve in order to be successful, their goals, and the core competencies (“the how”) the person will be successful. 3) Determine the rating scale. For example, at Uproot Talent - we use a scale from 1-5 for each success outcome, 5 “exceeding expectations” set on the Scorecard. We rate core competencies in the aggregrate on the same scale. How have you seen these biases show up? Let’s talk in the comments. #AntiOppressiveHiring #BiasInInterviews #MitigateBias
