Survivors of domestic violence have a unique insight into the challenges they face and the support they need. As we continue to observe #DVAM2024, it’s essential for us all to actively involve survivors in our efforts to create strategies, policies, and practices that prioritize their needs. Creating spaces where survivors feel safe to express their stories and insights – spaces that honor their experiences and validate their feelings is the best way to place survivors at the center of our work and ensure their voices, needs, and experiences guide our decisions. Tag an advocate who embodies what it means to heal, hold, and center survivors. Post your commitment to connective action for #DVAM2024 on your social media platforms at #CallForUnity throughout October! #TogetherWeHealURI #HealHoldCenter #SupportSurvivors

15 years ago, Obina came to URI as a domestic violence survivor with her two children. Today, Obina is a successful business owner and was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a flight attendant. She also raised two thriving children, who deeply benefitted from their mother’s healing journey. By holding space for Obina and allowing her to feel valued and heard, she was able to receive the guidance and support she needed at URI’s shelters to help transform her life. #TogetherWeHealURI #DVAM2024 #HealHoldCenter #SupportSurvivors #NoSurvivorJusticeWithoutRacialJustice

Dismantling anti-Blackness where it shows up in our personal and professional spaces is a specific and integral part of racial justice work. As we continue to heal, hold, and center survivors, especially those navigating anti-Blackness and other systems of oppression, we remain grounded in the knowledge that there is no survivor justice without racial justice. Tag an advocate who embodies what it means to heal, hold, and center survivors. 🌸 DiVA Spa Day: Empowering Survivors with Self-Care and Support 🌸 Urban Resource Institute was honored to participate in DiVA Spa, an event sponsored by the NEW YORK HISPANIC COSMETOLOGY AND BEAUTY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE INCORPO and the Office of The Bronx Borough President, Vanessa Gibson. This day of relaxation and healing provided domestic violence survivors with much-needed self-care services, including makeup, hair, massages, facials, and yoga. Beyond self-care, DiVA Spa connected survivors with critical resources, helping them rebuild confidence and reminding them that they deserve moments of beauty and celebration. We are grateful to Bronx Borough President Vanessa Gibson and her team for hosting this event as the start to a series during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and Bronx DA Darcel Clark, the NYC Mayor's Office to End Domestic and Gender-Based Violence, and Safe Horizon for their leadership and partnership in this work. Special thanks to URI VP of Government Affairs, Lauren Schuster, for her inspiring words to attendees, and to our Crime Victim Services Program Managers, Naomi Baez, Johanna Santana, Kyle Noonan, and Yancy Auqui, for their continuous advocacy for survivors at the event and at the Bronx Family Justice Center (FJC). If you or someone you know needs help in NYC, text BEGIN to 88788 or call 800.621.HOPE. #DVAM2024 #SupportSurvivors #TeamURI #DiVASpa #DomesticViolenceAwarenessMonth

Did you know? Native women and men in the United States experience domestic and sexual violence at alarming rates, with more than four in five Natives having experienced some form of violence in their lifetime and more than half experiencing physical violence by an intimate partner in the past year. Today is Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to not only honor the resilience of Native peoples and their ongoing fight for justice, sovereignty, and recognition but also an opportunity to support the movement to prevent and end domestic and sexual violence, which disproportionately affects millions of Natives every year. On this day and year-round, let’s amplify Indigenous voices, support Indigenous-led initiatives, and commit to raising awareness of all violence against Native peoples. #IndigenousPeoplesDay #HonorNativeCultures #NativeAmericanHeritage #IndigenousVoices #IndigenousHistory #IndigenousResilience #LandBack #NativePride #Decolonize
