🌍 We're excited to announce the launch of the ReMaking Our City – High School Youth Summer Program at URI Fab Lab through our Economic Empowerment Program (EEP). This summer, students in URI transitional housing are tackling urban inequities and designing solutions for a more sustainable and just city. The program features a dynamic speaker series, and we were honored to have Joyce McMillan – Founder and Executive Director of Just Making a Change for Families – as our first speaker. Joyce shared her experiences as a woman of color and her mission to address racial disparities through JMAC for Families. Her insights were incredibly inspiring. A special thanks to John Jefferys for his leadership, along with Blair Doroshwalther, Teal Inzunza, LMSW, and our dedicated Fab Lab youth. Every survivor of domestic violence is a crime victim who deserves unwavering support, information, and advocacy. At URI, we are wholeheartedly dedicated to uplifting and empowering survivors on their journey to safety and healing. Through our Crime Victim Services Program (CVSP) and Legal Education and Advocacy Program (LEAP), we offer vital resources and trauma-informed services tailored to their needs. Our compassionate CVSP advocates work to connect survivors in URI shelters and across NYC with essential resources such as counseling and advocacy, ensuring they find the safety they deserve. Available at the Bronx Family Justice Center and reachable via CVSPinfo@urinyc.org, our advocates provide guidance, understanding, and care at every step. Navigating legal options can be daunting for survivors, often leading them back to their abusers. LEAP steps in to educate survivors in our shelters about their legal rights, offering immediate access to comprehensive domestic violence legal aid. From child custody and visitation to orders of protection and debt issues, LEAP provides the crucial legal support survivors need to achieve and maintain their independence.
