About us

UrbanPromise is a community-based nonprofit located in Camden, New Jersey. Our mission is to equip children and young adults with the skills necessary for academic achievement, life management, spiritual growth, and Christian leadership. We seek to fulfill our mission through after-school programs, summer camps, two private schools, teen job training through our StreetLeader Program, and experiential learning. From boat-building to job training, UrbanPromise is preparing the next generation of youth for leadership within their own communities and beyond. Our approach— Holistic: We recognize that youth are resilient. Our goal is to support their on-going development through the integration of socio-emotional learning, mind/body practices and school-based support services. Experiential: UrbanPromise promotes critical thinking, creativity, and experiential learning; taking students beyond the classroom to engage with the community and discover new perspectives. Empowerment: UrbanPromise invests in the intrinsic value of every child, empowering them to nurture their unique strengths and have an enduring trust in themselves to be transformative leaders for their communities and beyond. Youth Development Model — We’re a community rooted in the values of long-term relationships, Christian faith, innovation, and a commitment to emotional and social well-being. Our learning environment takes children and youth beyond the walls of conventional classrooms and nurtures critical thinking and creativity through an emphasis on experiential learning, community service, and leadership development. Our unique pedagogy allows youth to develop concrete skills, build self-confidence, envision a hopeful future, and discover a vocation rich in meaning and purpose. Our programs have inspired replications around the country and even across the globe in countries like Malawi, Nigeria, Honduras, and Uganda.

Please help us welcome our AMAZING new staff!🥳 Tonight we celebrated this special group joining our UrbanPromise community. Our leadership team were thrilled to share words of encouragement, gratitude & excitement for this upcoming season together. 🦋“UrbanPromise’s mascot is the monarch butterfly. Just like a caterpillar transforms into a beautiful butterfly, our students grow and change throughout their time at UrbanPromise. They start as curious learners, develop their skills in elementary school, and become independent thinkers in high school. With support, they’re ready to spread their wings and soar into the world. And sometimes, like the monarch butterfly returning home, our alumni staff come back to UrbanPromise to share their experiences and give back to the community that helped them grow.” -Mr. Ryan

I love good surprises. I love bumping into alumni—hearing updates on their fruitful lives and reveling in the memories they cherish from their time with our ministry. “I attended summer camp back in the early 1990s,” shared Joanna Nicasio, standing in our parking lot last week. Joanna was leading a corporate volunteer group from TD Bank. Fifteen TD employees donated a day to pull weeds, clean closets, cut grass, and paint classrooms. An invaluable gift to our staff. “This place was so special to me as a child,” she reminisced. “I was one of six children. My mother worked two jobs. UrbanPromise was that safe, fun place where we could just be kids.” Over the past three decades, thousands of Camden’s children and teens have enjoyed the benefits of comprehensive, neighborhood-based summer day camp programs. In the moment, one never fully understands the profound impact that safety, love, singing songs, fun, field trips, arts and crafts, Bible lessons, and regular meals will have on a child’s development. Sometimes it’s years later—in a random encounter—that the impact is revealed. Like Joanna. A beautiful reminder. Walking across campus this week, I once again was moved by the laughter and singing. I felt the youthful energy reverberating down the hallways. Another summer begins. More memories are created. It never gets old. Bruce Main Founder & President PS. Check out the short interview above with Joanne. It was the good news I needed this week. https://lnkd.in/epSrGvTi
