🍀 This past week representatives of USAID Cambodia and USAID Conserve held courtesy meetings with Cambodian government authorities in Koh Kong and Sihanouk Ville provinces. 🤝 In each of the provinces the USAID Conserve project was formally introduced to provincial authorities by USAID Cambodia. During each meeting the USAID Conserve team and its conservation partners provided provincial authorities with an overview of the projects approach to support community-based organizations through direct grants, improved livelihoods, and long-term financing through carbon projects. The USAID Conserve team also briefed provincial authorities on how the project will combat wildlife trafficking through social behavior change communications. 🌳 Provincial authorities embraced the objectives of USAID Conserve and committed to supporting the project to conserve Cambodia’s natural resources and support local communities. Meeting participants agreed that all parties will share information on USAID Conserve activities and that learning exchanges and dialogue sessions between local authorities and communities should take place over the coming years. #USAIDCambodia #USAIDConserve

💡 Small grants, Big Impact for Community-Based Organizations! 🤝 USAID Conserve signed eight grant agreements with community-based organizations (CBOs). Grants were provided to two community protected areas - Mlu Prey Kurb and Sambo Aphiwoat in Preah Vihear province – and five community fisheries (CFi) - Kampong Prohok, Anlung Ta Our, Prek Toal, Tvang, and Kbal Toal in Prek Toal, Tonle Sap, Battambang province, and one CFi, Phat Sanday, in the Tonle Sap, Kampong Thom province. The signing ceremony, witnessed by USAID Cambodia, relevant provincial departments, commune chiefs, and community members, contributes to USAID Conserve’s plan to provide a total of 278 direct grants to CBOs. 🖌 Before the agreements were signed, each community presented their project plans to local stakeholders to secure their support and buy-in. Local authorities noted that they were well-informed of CBO activities, and they committed to supporting CBO grant implementation. The essential elements of each CBO grant include enhancing the institutional capacity of CBOs, improving local livelihoods, engaging in carbon financing projects, and conserving community-managed ecosystems. Providing direct grants to CBOs is the foundation of USAID Conserve’s approach to locally led environmental conservation and community development. CBOs are the frontline defenders of protected areas, playing a crucial role in safeguarding natural resources and conserving wildlife. By improving the livelihoods of local communities, the pressure on natural resources is reduced. Additionally, grants enhance the community capacity through training and coaching, leading to better conservation efforts and sustainable development. #USAIDCambodia #USAIDConserve

🌱 Groundbreaking ceremony for one of Cambodia’s five regional tree nursery stations 🌱 USAID Conserve attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the regional tree nursery station in Tboung Khmum province. H.E Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, presided over the ceremony with participation from various stakeholders including the provincial governor, development partners, and civil society organizations. The event highlighted collaboration between the Ministry of Environment, UNDP, and the Coca-Cola Company to develop tree nursery stations. The Tboung Khmum tree nursery station is the first of five planned regional stations. Additional stations will be in Koh Kong, Kampong Speu, Siem Reap, and Mondulkiri provinces. Spanning three hectares, the Tboung Khmum station will produce one million tree seedlings annually. This initiative is a key component of Cambodia’s National Reforestation Strategy which aims to plant one million trees per year and increase forest cover to 60% by 2050. Reforestation is a critical aspect of Cambodia’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. Through direct small grants to community-based organizations, USAID Conserve is supporting communities to participate in this national effort by supporting community led reforestation efforts on community protected areas and community forests. #USAIDConserve #USAIDCambodia #Reforestation

🌱 World Ozone Day 🌍 is celebrated on September 16th each year to raise awareness about the depletion of the ozone layer and to encourage actions to protect it. Did you know that forests play a crucial role in maintaining the environmental balance that supports the protection of the ozone layer? Forests are crucial for protecting the ozone layer and ecosystems. They absorb carbon dioxide, provide oxygen, and offer habitat for many species. Ozone depletion can endanger human, animal, and plant life. To prevent ozone depletion, we need to conserve and reforest. USAID Conserve is supporting local communities in participating in the reforestation and conservation of community-protected areas and community forests in response to climate change. 🌳 #USAIDConserve #USAIDCambodia #WorldOzoneDay #ទិវាអូហ្សូនពិភពលោក #OzoneDay #ClimateAction

🌿 Connecting private sector companies to community-based enterprises! 🌿 USAID Conserve facilitated a visit between the private sector companies Unica and Danish Care Foods Co., Ltd and community-based enterprises in the coastal areas of Koh Kong and Preah Sihanouk provinces. The visit included the community fisheries of Chumpou Khmoa, Prek Svay, Koh Kachong, and Koh Sdach, and the community protected areas of Peam Krasoap and Boeung Kachhang. The objective of the trip was to build relations between private sector companies and local enterprises, evaluate product quality and hygiene practices of communities, determine the capacity of community enterprises to meet the supply requirements of the private sector, and discuss what conservation practices should be put in place to ensure that community enterprises are also wildlife friendly. The visit concluded with communities agreeing to ship their raw and semi-processed products to the UNICA and Danish Care Food factories in Phnom Penh so that the transportation chain and product quality could be evaluated. Establishing relationships between community-based enterprises and private sector partners is critical to ensuring the long-term success of community conservation and livelihood development. For local communities this type of visit increases their understanding of the broader market opportunities for their products and the steps that communities need to take to meet buyer requirements. For private sector enterprises this type of visit allows them to evaluate opportunities for expanding their supplier network and to clearly communicate to communities what changes need to be made to meet product quality and supply requirements. Additionally, private sector and community-based enterprises are also able to discuss the importance of livelihoods interventions that are conservation friendly. Moving forward, communities and the private sector will discuss conservation agreements linked to fisheries products and what percentage of revenues should be provided for fisheries patrolling by community-based organizations. #SustainableDevelopment #CommunityEmpowerment #Cambodia #USAIDCambodia #USAIDConserve #PartnershipsForProgress
