FLRAA will usher in a new era of speed and range for Army aviation Like its Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey predecessor, FLRAA’s tiltrotor design radically alters expectations of conventional rotorcraft. FLRAA’s two Rolls-Royce AE 1107F engines allow a cruise speed of 280 knots. The V-280 demonstrator has recorded a max speed of 305 knots. FLRAA will allow the US Army to develop the fourth evolution of vertical envelopment, the Large Scale Long-Range Air Assault (L2A2). Currently, "we cannot actually do Large Scale Long-Range Air Assault today....What the Large Scale Long-Range #AirAssault is, is our ability to deliver one brigade combat team in one period of darkness over 500 miles arriving behind enemy lines able to conduct sustained operations." - Maj. The U.S. Army Aviation Center of Excellence welcomes #ArmyAviationCivilian Dr. Kenneth Hawley as director for the Organization and Personnel Force Development Directorate. Hawley retired in 2020 at the rank of colonel after 30 years of active-duty service. The master aviator flew the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior and UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters, served as the FORSCOM G-3 Aviation director, commanded 2-6 Cavalry Squadron and the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, and had two deployments to Iraq. He most recently worked as USAACE deputy chief of staff, and as a program management officer for the Aviation Capability Development and Integration Directorate, Army Futures Command. He holds a doctorate degree in executive leadership. Hawley learned as an assistant brigade S-1 that the Army relies on people, not necessarily things, and is excited to focus on the organization and personnel side of things. “If there’s any structural changes that Army aviation has to go through, we’re the organization that builds those structural changes. The force design update that Army aviation’s going through right now, this team is the one that put that together. As we look at modifications further out, we’re the ones who are going to take a look at what’s the right structure for that,” he said. His organization also supports the USAACE commanding general’s branch proponent responsibility on the personnel side, with managing the accessions piece, including putting together aviation bonuses and working policy updates. “We’re really shaping not only who’s coming in and who we’re keeping on the people side, but also I think what the future of Army aviation’s going to look like, not necessarily with the parts and pieces but what’s the right structure and going about making those changes,” he said. USAACE recently hosted Daleville High School Army JROTC Cadets for a #MeetYourArmy event that included a #BlackHawk helicopter aerial tour of Fort Novosel, stick time in flight simulators, visit to the Army Aviation Museum, and lunch in the AIT dining facility. Even though Daleville High is within walking distance of the gate, over 2/3 of these Cadets had never been on post or touched a helicopter before, and our Meet Your Army program helps bridge the gap between the US Army and our #Wiregrass #CommunityPartners.
