Day 1 of Women Leaders – Promoting Peace and Security was a powerful start! 💪 We began by meeting with Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office Rosie Rivera, the first woman in her role, and Undersheriff Cynthia Archuleta, where we discussed the challenges and triumphs of women breaking barriers in law enforcement. Next, we connected with Nicole Carpenter at the Women's Leadership Institute (pictured here) to learn about the ElevateHER Challenge, a powerful initiative to promote women in leadership. We concluded the day with Sister Andrea Muñoz Spannaus, who shared the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Relief Society's global humanitarian efforts and how women come together to transform communities. 🌍 A powerful day of learning and leading! #UtahGlobalDiplomacy #IVLP #WomenInLeadership #PromotingPeace #ElevateHER #WomenLead

On this solemn day of remembrance, we honor the lives lost, the bravery shown, and the enduring spirit of unity that emerged in the wake of 9/11. Among the many stories of connection and resilience is that of DeAnna and Lynn DeBry, long-time residents of Utah and dedicated hosts for the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP). This program, established by the U.S. Department of State, fosters diplomatic ties by connecting international professionals with American families through shared meals and meaningful conversations. The DeBrys have welcomed countless visitors into their home over the years, but none was as memorable as their dinner on September 13, 2001. Just two days after the devastating attacks of 9/11, the DeBrys were scheduled to host six international guests from Indonesia and other East Asian countries, all of whom were Muslim. Initially hesitant and fearful due to the unfolding events, DeAnna and Lynn grappled with whether to continue with the dinner. However, after deep reflection and prayer, they realized the importance of reaching out in friendship, not fear. When their guests arrived, the atmosphere was tense, as both hosts and visitors shared feelings of apprehension and uncertainty. But as the evening unfolded, they found common ground in their shared love of family, faith, and country. The evening culminated in a poignant moment when friends of the DeBrys, who had originally planned to play a lively hoedown, instead performed a heartfelt rendition of the Ashokan Farewell. As the music played, tears flowed, and a sense of unity filled the room. Despite the differences that had initially divided them, everyone present felt a renewed commitment to connection, understanding, and peace. This powerful encounter reminded the DeBrys and their guests that, even in the face of immense tragedy, we have the choice to reach out with compassion and courage. As we remember the events of 9/11, we are called to honor the memory of those we lost by striving for understanding and empathy in our own lives. It is in these moments of openness, when we choose connection over division, that we can honor the past and hope for a future built on mutual respect and shared humanity. Today, let us reflect on the power of small, personal acts of kindness to heal and unite us, even in the face of profound loss. #Utahglobaldiplomacy #september11 #rememberance
