This past weekend, our officers had an incredible time at the MAES Leadership Academy (MLA) 2024, celebrating the 50th anniversary of MAES ! We were inspired by keynote speakers like former NASA astronaut José Hernández and many other esteemed leaders in STEM. A special shoutout to our VP External Thomas Del Palacio for receiving the Brillante Student Award and being a 2024 MAES scholarship recipient! 🎉 Congrats to Ismael Luna and Abdiel Cruz for their scholarship achievements as well. During the retreat, we tackled the critical issue of underrepresentation of Hispanics in STEM in a Shark Tank-style competition. Proud to share that Abdiel's team placed third, Lizbeth Licerio, our Director of Membership’s team secured second, and Vanessa Gonzalez our Director of SHPEtina’s team took home first! 🥇 This weekend was filled with learning, growth, and a chance to connect with the MAES familia from other universities. We’re grateful for the uplifting experiences and the opportunity to collaborate with such passionate individuals. Let’s continue to break barriers in STEM together! ✨⚙️

HAPPY HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH FROM UTEP SHPE//MAES! As a UTEP familia of Hispanic engineering students, we take pride in celebrating this month with our rich vibrant culture, our resilience, and our many accomplishments. Throughout this past month, we reflected upon the rich heritage that has molded our values of unity, perseverance, and success. This month, one of the highlights was being able to meet Avanza, a group of Mexican-American engineering and business professionals. Such a great opportunity for networking, learning from their experiences as former SHPE members, and transitioning from students into successful business/professionals. Their stories keep inspiring us in breaking barriers toward a better future! We are equally proud of our students who demonstrated their pride in being Hispanic during this month by reminding us that it is great to be ourselves and come from where we do. To all the Hispanic engineers and students out there: ¡Sigamos avanzando juntos! #HispanicHeritageMonth #UTEP #SHPE #MAES #Engineering #Familia #LatinoEngineers #HispanicPride #CareerSuccess #STEMLeadership #Networking

ScholarSHPE applications are open! Lack of funds is one of the most challenging reasons facing Hispanic students pursuing their degrees. So SHPE offers thousands of reasons to ensure their members DO reach graduation – over a million to be exact. With over 1,500 scholarships awarded since 2018 totaling over $5,000,000, SHPE is actively narrowing the gap in the Hispanic STEM education pipeline. Apply by November 15! https://lnkd.in/drxQTKbQ

Highlights for the Month of September📚 September was a very busy month of growth in opportunity with SHPE/MAES! Here is how we developed professionally and strengthened our community: • September 16: Kicked off with a Resume Workshop in collaboration with ASCE, ASME, IEEE, and AIAA. We perfected our resumes and picked up some tips that will prove useful in today's job market. • September 17: Attended in-depth Technical Interview Prep with ServiceNow to learn how to ace those grueling technical interviews. • September 18: Exclusive Career Insights through Career Info Session with ExxonMobil and explored exciting pathways for the energy industry. • September 20: Networked with Avanza from MIT, a group of engineering professionals from prestigious universities across the nation, offering new avenues for mentorship and collaboration opportunities. • September 22: Ran another Technical Interview Workshop in preparation for future job opportunities, keeping our SHPE/MAES members on their toes. • September 27: Finished the month with an Athletic Social with over 26 participating pairs! Our sand-volleyball-tournament glued our members together better than ever outside of the classroom! September has really set the stage for SHPE/MAES heading into October with a month full of learning and networking opportunities beyond value. Much continued growth together! #ProfessionalDevelopment #STEM #Networking #Engineering #SHPE #MAES #CareerSuccess #Community #UTEP

Two weeks ago, our Director of MemberSHPE & Director of Communications, Lizbeth Licerio & Daisy Villalobos, attended a Women in Engineering Event hosted by ASCE El Paso Branch Younger Member Group. We were inspired by our keynote speaker, Maria Elena Giner, Ph.D., P.E., MBA, a remarkable leader and former SHPE member in her undergraduate years. As the first Latina to serve as the U.S. Commissioner of the International Boundary and Water Commission, Dr. Giner shared invaluable insights on the power of compassion, perseverance, and passion in our careers. Her journey from a first-generation college graduate to a trailblazer in environmental infrastructure is a testament to the impact we can have when we embrace our roots and push boundaries. Let’s continue to support one another and elevate our voices in engineering! #WomenInEngineering #SHPE #Leadership #Inspiration #Engineering

    Undergraduate Electrical Engineer at UTEP

Hello everyone! This past academic year, I had the opportunity to be the President of our UTEP SHPE//MAES student chapter at UTEP. Despite the long hours of planning, organizing, and non-sleeping days, this has been the most rewarding experience that I have had in college. This year, our chapter saw tremendous growth and success. We welcomed over 300 members at our first general meeting, increased the membership count from 440 to 950, took more than 150 students to the SHPE National Convention, and significantly increased our organization's visibility within The University of Texas at El Paso. In addition, we grew our external relationships hosting over 25 corporate events, resulting in greater funding opportunities for our familia. We also introduced the SHPEtinas executive position, which hosted four corporate events targeting women in STEM. What I'm most proud of, however, is witnessing the growth of our student officers and members. The transformation we all experienced from the beginning of the academic year to our final general meeting shows the impact that SHPE/MAES has. Moments like hearing students say, "I got an internship offer," will stay with me forever. I'm deeply grateful to everyone who supported me throughout this process. I had the opportunity to connect with many people and build meaningful and lasting relationships. Your support has been invaluable, and I will always be thankful. Special thanks to the SHPE Region 5 team, the MAES team, and the UTEP College of Engineering Departments. La chispa de uno encenderá a los demás! Now, it's time for the new executive board to lead our organization to even greater heights:)! P.S. I know this post is a bit late.
