2024 marked the first year that the School became "majority minority," with 55% of our 795-member student body hailing from underrepresented and minority backgrounds. And while we are immensely proud of this, our 4th Insight Into Diversity magazine HEED Award, associate dean MELISSA GILBERT GOMES said, it "sets our continued course for the future as we push to keep this work going." Diversity is a journey, after all. https://ow.ly/Rzrj50TTLev

💙🧡🩺🌍🌏 Meet The University of Queensland, Australia, exchange students Millie, Anna, and Amelia. (Anna) Hiker. Harmonica player. Grew up on a farm in Roma, Australia, about six hours' west of Brisbane, riding horses and doing cattle work with her dad. (Amelia) Born and raised in Brisbane, Australia. A devoted dog lover who loves to cook and bake. Has explored nearly 30 states across the U.S. (Millie) Animal lover and pickleball enthusiast. Future ER nurse, midwife, and nurse practitioner who hopes to complete her nurse residency in Australia before moving back to the UU.S. to work full-time. THE DIFFERENCES THEY'VE NOTED BETWEEN U.S. and AUSTRALIAN HEALTHCARE (Amelia) "One major difference is the higher level of support from techs and certified nursing assistants in the U.S., which allows nurses to focus on more complex patient care. Additionally, the advanced integration of technology in the U.S. healthcare system is truly impressive." (Anna) "In Australia, we have universal healthcare which allows anyone to receive free healthcare. . . Nursing school is also structured differently, as we begin clinicals in our first semester and continue learning skills into our final year! I was also very surprised to learn that the medications are prepared at bedside rather than in the medication room." (Millie) "One of the most significant differences I've observed is the level of technology integration. It's been an eye-opening experience, and has furthered my learning, but I also appreciate the more hands-on approach often taken in Australia." UVA SCHOOL OF NURSING IN A WORD? 💙🧡🩺🌍🌏 (Millie) "SUPPORTIVE. From the moment I arrived for my semester abroad, both the staff and my peers have been incredibly welcoming and uplifting." (Amelia) "EMPOWERING. The School fosters an environment that encourages both personal and professional growth." (Anna) "CARING. I feel extremely supported by all staff and fellow students who are always willing to go the extra mile to help when needed." ### Join Millie, Anna, and Amelia all day Wednesday, Oct. 30, as they take over the School of Nursing's official Instagram page! Follow along all day on stories. https://ow.ly/Cv4z50TTKwt Happy #2024UVAGlobalweek #uvaglobalweek2024

Nurse honorees: ARE YOU READY TO DON THE PURPLE with us? 💜💜💜 Tonight at 6 PM in McLeod Auditorium marks UVA School of Nursing's annual Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing induction ceremony, when 40 new honorees will be inducted into the now 52-year-old chapter and join the hundreds of fellow UVA nurses and Sigma members who came before them. After remarks by Beta Kappa president and associate professor Malinda Whitlow, fellow faculty member (and alumna and Sigma member) Samantha Hudgins will greet each new inductee with the distinctive purple cord that they'll also wear at graduation. We're also grateful for the support of past-president Sharon Bragg, DNP, RN, CCRN, assistant professor, treasurer Emily Evans, assistant professor, governance chair James Nisley, clinical instructor, assistant professor Richard Ridge, RN, MBA, PhD, awards chair, professors Elizabeth Taliaferro-Jones and Gina DeGennaro , who are members at large, and UVA Health representatives, faculty members and nurses Tanya Thomas and Mesha Jones. Beta Kappa induction ceremonies go back to 1972, when things looked a little different ... Still present at tonight's ceremony, though, will be purple candles, purple awards, and the fellowship of gifted nursing students in a community of their extraordinary peers. Congratulations, Beta Kappers! 👏👏👏 P.S. If you're curious about the chapter's history, read more here: https://lnkd.in/eB5M9_ZT Special shout-out to Beta Kappa's immediate past-president Sharon Bragg, DNP, RN, CCRN, assistant professor, treasurer Emily Evans, assistant professor, governance chair James Nisley, clinical instructor, assistant professor Richard Ridge, RN, MBA, PhD, awards chair, professors Elizabeth Taliaferro-Jones and Gina DeGennaro, members at large, and UVA Health representatives, faculty members and nurses Tanya Thomas and Mesha Jones. Rushing never serves. Multitasking can set us on edge. Attention, a philosopher once said, “is the rarest and purest form of generosity.” Show up, calm down, connect. And put that phone aside!!
