We also feature programs that work directly with individuals with chronic conditions and disabilities to provide support, assessment, training, and access to assistive devices. Research is a major focus of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. We are among the nation's leading recipients of funding from the NIH, the NIDILRR, the CDC, and other federal, state and foundation funders. First-generation college students, especially those from underrepresented populations, may need more support, according to a new study. “I've been in physical therapy education now for over 20 years, and I've noticed that students from underrepresented backgrounds experience more stress and more burden,” said Associate Professor Bernadette Williams-York, one of the study's authors.
