  • Did you know? Public safety in Vancouver is about more than hiring officers—it’s a full ecosystem. If approved by voters, Proposition 4 would provide funding for: 👮♀️ Up to 80 new officers over six years ⚖️ Funding for Clark County jails, courts and other justice services. Last year, the City paid $5.25 million for these services, which will increase with Prop 4. Prop 4 supports a coordinated effort between Vancouver and Clark County to keep the community safe. In our recent community survey, 62% of respondents ranked investigating illegal firearms as a top public safety priority. VPD’s Crime Reduction Unit, staffed by 6 detectives and 1 sergeant, covers crime reduction efforts across Vancouver. In 2023, this unit: ⚖️ Made 275 arrests 👮♂️ Seized 113 guns   To help meet the growing demand for police services in Vancouver, the City has submitted Prop 4 to the voters, a property tax levy lid lift which, if approved, would add police officers, safety staff and related services. • When we think about the safety and security of our Vancouver community, we often picture the dedicated police officers patrolling our streets. But did you know there’s a whole team of unsung heroes working behind the scenes? Vancouver’s eight Police Service Techs document cases and help connect the dots to convict non-violent criminals in Vancouver and (occasionally) beyond! When a 74-year-old woman reported losing $70,000 to a scam, Police Service Technicians McPoland and Parrish quickly jumped into action, working with detectives to track down the scammer's address in New York. Their swift work stopped the scammer and helped recover over $113,000 for elderly victims. To help meet increased demand for public safety services as Vancouver grows, the City has proposed a ballot measure to Vancouver voters in the Nov. 5 general election. If approved, Prop. 4 would generate funding to support hiring up to 36 additional non-sworn police staff, 80 police officers and more. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/gJ3TsVVc

It's official! Yesterday, effective 5:01 p.m., Lon Pluckhahn was sworn in as Vancouver's eleventh City Manager. Lon has served as Vancouver's Deputy City Manager since 2021 and brings more than three decades of experience leading dynamic and growing communities to the role. Read a message from your new City Manager to learn about some of the key priorities he'll be working to advance as we close out 2024: "As I step into a new role as City Manager, I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to departing City Manager Eric Holmes and to the Mayor and Council for this opportunity. First to Eric, for originally bringing me to Vancouver and for his steady leadership over the last 15 years. Second, to the Mayor and City Council for their confidence in me as Vancouver’s 11th City Manager. I have several priorities for the remainder of 2024, first among them is the hiring a new Police Chief. Chief Mori has led the department with vision and compassion, and I'm looking forward to selecting a chief who will continue to build on this foundation. The internal recruitment process is well underway with interviews expected in the third week of October, and opportunities for the community to meet any candidates before the end of the month. You can follow the recruitment process and stay informed about these opportunities at www.beheardvancouver.org Second, starting the process for the recruitment of a new Deputy City Manager. I am anticipating this to be a national search that will have opportunities for internal and external stakeholders to meet and provide feedback on candidates. With the end of the year rapidly approaching, I would expect to be filling this position no later than April 2025. Over the next few months, I will be setting up office hours at various City facilities. I expect to make this a regular part of my calendar, so keep an eye out for announcements. Thank you to all in the community for everything you do to help make the City successful. I am looking forward to guiding Vancouver into its next era."
