VELCO's vision is to create a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model.
About us
VELCO is Vermont’s statewide electric transmission provider whose sights are set on creating a sustainable Vermont through our people, assets, relationships and operating model. Formed in 1956 when local Vermont utilities established the nation’s first “transmission only” company to access clean hydro power from New York, VELCO remains unique in two important ways: 1. Our ownership comprises the state’s 17 distribution utilities and a public benefits corporation; and, 2. our for-profit status is structured to return cooperative-like value to our owners, their customers, and every Vermonter. VELCO’s system now includes: 740 miles of transmission lines; 55 substations, switching stations and terminal facilities; 13,000 acres of rights-of-way; a statewide emergency service radio system; and, a 1,600-mile fiber optic network that monitors and controls the electric system and helps to deliver broadband services to Vermonters. Headquartered in Rutland, Vermont, VELCO employees strive to give Vermont’s utilities and their customers a reliable high-voltage grid, a strong unified voice on regional energy issues, and continued access to safe, reliable, cost-effective electricity.

Just wrapped up an awesome update meeting on a joint project between VT distribution utilties , our transmission operator Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) , and multiple departments at University of Vermont. Setting up the foundation to study the impact of climate and electricaiton on both the distribution and transmission grid. Awesome to have all of these great partners right in our backyard. A cross functional team focused on maintaining reliability and affordability while the grid goes through significant change. Thanks to VELCO for coordinating and UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships for supporting this partnership and making this all happen! Also thanks Daniel Kopin for the photo since I couldn’t make it in person

One last fall foliage picture before its officially stick season in Vermont. VELCO GIS Developer, Tingkuan Hsieh, took advantage of a gorgeous fall day to drive around Vermont with his drone to capture the beauty of the season. Thanks TK!🍁

Vermont in the fall is simply breathtaking! 🍁 Our teams are out in the field, soaking in the season’s beauty. This stunning shot was captured by Colby Marshall, one of VELCO's Utility Arborists, along the K32 line in Ludlow.

The carbon intensity of the grid during peak net load events is often much higher than during daylight hours when solar is producing. Joan White (Solar Energy Industries Association), Todd Olinsky-Paul (Clean Energy States Alliance (CESA) & Clean Energy Group), Hantz Presume (Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO)) and moderate Jesse Stowell (Encore Renewable Energy will explore the economic signals and multi-pronged solutions including solar+storage, virtual power plants, front-of-the-meter storage, and demand response necessary to clean the peak with energy storage. A robust transmission system will make New England’s transition to renewable energy more cost-effective and reliable. Transmission can unlock new in-state renewable development and create an energy exchange between New England’s offshore wind and Hydro Quebec’s incredible storage capacity. Join Betsy Bloomer (Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO)), Josh Bagnato (TDI), Serge Abergel (Hydro Québec), and Dana Sweet (Grid United) at #REV2024 to learn where our interregional transmission system is headed.
