Students Lifting Each Other, Secretly.

About us

Viranda is a free, anonymous self-expression app that connects two students in a chat—one shares (the “Ventor”), and the other listens (the “Vira”). Once the chat ends, it’s erased like it never happened. Both sides remain anonymous, so no one knows who’s on the other end. It’s a non-crisis way to connect on campus - got something on your mind? Viranda will match you with a Vira ready to listen and lift you up. Want to switch roles? You can apply to be a Vira and empower your fellow students.

A recent study titled "Venting makes people prefer—and preferentially support—us over those we vent about" by a team of psychologists led by Jaimie Krems at UCLA, has uncovered some fascinating findings. Here are a few key takeaways: 🔹 Venting can make listeners more supportive of the person venting, thereby strengthening social bonds. 🔹 Compared to direct criticism, venting is more effective at winning over listeners. 🔹 The success of venting depends on avoiding an aggressive tone and approach. Feeling lonely in college? You're not alone! #Loneliness is a growing concern among young adults, and college students are no exception. This study, published in the International Journal of Social Science and Humanity by Revati Bhagchandani, explores the link between loneliness and psychological well-being in this population. Investigating the Connection: Researchers used a survey method to gather data from 101 college students. Participants were divided into two groups (male and female) and completed a two-part questionnaire distributed electronically. ❇️ Part 1: Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scales: This well-established tool assessed students' overall psychological health across various dimensions like autonomy, purpose in life, and positive relations with others. ❇️ Part 2: UCLA Loneliness Scale: This scale measured students' feelings of loneliness and social isolation. Key Findings: ❇️ The study revealed a significant negative relationship between loneliness and psychological well-being. In other words, students who reported higher levels of loneliness also showed lower psychological well-being. ❇️ Interestingly, no significant gender differences emerged in loneliness or well-being scores. This suggests that loneliness may affect both genders equally in this context. The Takeaway: These findings highlight the importance of addressing loneliness among college students, as it can significantly impact their mental health. While further research is needed, fostering strong social connections may be a key factor in promoting well-being and reducing feelings of isolation in this age group. 🔗 Link to the full study in the comments below. #MentalHealth #StudentWellBeing #Loneliness #HigherEd

📢 New Study Highlights the Link Between Loneliness and Student Mental Health A new study by Active Minds, Inc. and TimelyCare sheds light on the profound impact of loneliness on college students' mental health. Conducted with around 1,100 U.S. college students, the data reveals crucial insights into the psychological distress experienced by students. ❇️ College students who feel lonely are 4x more likely to experience severe psychological distress. ❇️ Nearly two-thirds (64.7%) of college students report feeling lonely. ❇️ 51.7% are concerned about their friends' mental health. ❇️ 28.8% of students report severe psychological distress. ❇️ LGBQ+ students (70.3%) report higher loneliness than non-LGBQ+ peers (60.6%). ❇️ Only half believe students actively address mental health challenges on campuses. ❇️ Key factors affecting mental health: isolation (28.4%), being left out (23.1%), and lacking companionship (21%). ❇️ Black and Latino/a/e students prioritize mental health most. ❇️ Over half (53.7%) say mental health informs their behavior and actions. 💡 Read the full report to understand how to transform isolation into community and improve student well-being. New research from Northwestern Medicine suggests loneliness follows a U-shaped pattern across adulthood: higher loneliness in young and older adulthood, lower loneliness in middle adulthood. The study examined data from 9 longitudinal studies worldwide (pre-pandemic). Here are some of the key findings: ❇️ Several factors linked to higher loneliness across all ages: social isolation, sex (women more at risk), education level (lower education linked to higher loneliness), physical limitations. ❇️ Middle adulthood may be less lonely due to social interactions like work, marriage, and family. ❇️ Younger adults may experience loneliness due to life transitions (education, career, relationships). The study highlights the need for interventions to address loneliness. Link to full study in the first comment. In the following video, corresponding study author Eileen Graham, associate professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, summarizes the findings from the study. #loneliness #socialisolation
