About us
The Virginia Bankers Association has served as the organized voice for the Commonwealth’s banking industry since 1893 providing solutions to aid in resolving differences, unifying efforts, and accomplishing objectives otherwise not achievable. The VBA represents all Virginia state and commercial banks from the smallest to the largest and works to represent the issues and activities that are of utmost importance to the banking industry. The government affairs and legal department work effortlessly with the legislature and congress to protect the values and standards around which the banking industry was built. The professional development team ensures that there are a multitude of quality seminars, workshops, and conferences each year to promote lifelong learning among bank associates. Through partnerships with trustworthy and cost effective vendors, the VBA is able to offer products and services banks need in order to be successful in serving their customers. While working to better the industry as a whole, the VBA also cares about the well-being of its members and of the community. Through the VBA Benefits Corporation, members of the Virginia Bankers Association are able to obtain health benefits, coverages, and rates not available otherwise.

ICYMI: Last week, the VBA's Matt Bruning partnered with Steve Yeakel, CAE, VACB, and JR Blau, Virginia Credit Union League for an OpEd in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, sharing how the "Credit Card Competition Act" (CCCA) threatens to compromise the secure credit card system we trust. In the article, they share how the CCCA threatens to disrupt the secure credit card system, allowing retailers to choose less secure payment networks. This change could compromise consumer data security and diminish the value of rewards programs, which many customers rely on. While megaretailers may benefit from this change, it’s our responsibility to safeguard financial security for all Virginians. We encourage you to contact Senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner and tell them to oppose the Credit Card Competition Act and stand up for Virginia consumers. Commentary: Do you trust retailers to secure consumer payments? We don't

This week, 27 Virginia banks are joining the American Bankers Association Foundation and banks across the country to promote the Get Smart About Credit program (GSAC). This national campaign encourages banks to teach teens and young adults how to manage their money. In recognition of GSAC this week, #vabankers offer these seven tips to help students shape their financial future: 1. You are in charge. It’s your job to manage your money. Set yourself up for success by creating a realistic budget and sticking to it. 2. Watch your spending. It all comes back to the simple lesson of needs vs. wants. Pace spending and increase saving by cutting unnecessary expenses like eating out or shopping. 3. Use credit wisely. Understand the responsibilities and benefits of credit. How you handle your credit could affect you well after graduation. Shop around for a card that best suits your needs. Pay as much as you can, as soon as you can, and always pay by the due date. 4. Utilize your bank services. Banks are more than money in a vault. They offer valuable services that students can benefit from like check cashing, debit cards, mobile and online banking, balance alerts, personal loans, direct deposit, financial education and identity theft protection. 5. Be cautious when it comes to money. Don't just trust anyone with your money. Be skeptical of classmates, friends or salespeople who have ideas for your money. 6. Save, save, save! Things happen, and it's important that you are financially prepared when your car or computer breaks down or another unexpected emergency occurs. No matter how small the amount, you should start putting some money away immediately. 7. Ask. This is a learning experience, so if you need help, ask. Your parents or your banker are a good place to start and remember - the sooner the better. Banks across Virginia regularly communicate with their customers about smart money management. You can learn more about this program and see a list of participating banks here: https://lnkd.in/gGfjAcMz
