Providing educational resources to recruit and train a dedicated healthcare workforce.

🌟 Happy Feature Friday! 🌟 Today's spotlighted scholar is Gina DeMilt, a soon-to-be Physician Assistant earning her degree from the University of Lynchburg School of PA Medicine. We asked Gina why she chose to become an AHEC scholar, as well as what benefits she sees herself gaining from the program. Here's what she said: "I am passionate about underserved and rural communities and wanted to learn more within this setting. Lynchburg provides this aspect already, but I wanted a little more in depth knowledge on the difference in healthcare in this setting. Becoming an AHEC scholar helped me get more insight and have clinical rotation in more rural settings than some of my classmates which provided me with more experience in these patient populations. From these experiences, it pushed me to pursue a career in working with these populations which I am excited about beginning soon."

  • Our Student Leadership Program is now in session! Today, our SLP participants had the opportunity to learn about barriers to healthcare access for populations in rural Virginia. VHWDA would like to thank our guest speaker and presenter, Wendy Welch. Wendy currently serves as the Executive Director at the Southwest Virginia Graduate Medical Education Consortium. We greatly appreciate her taking the time to help educate our future healthcare workforce.

Providing educational resources to recruit and train a dedicated healthcare workforce.

✨ Feature Friday is here! ✨ Today, we'd like to introduce you to Micaiah Landrum, a Randolph-Macon College student currently in his second year of the Physician Assistant program. We asked Micaiah what inspired him to pursue a career in healthcare, and what he found to be most rewarding about his work. Here's what he said: "I hail from King William County, a rural and mostly agricultural community about 40 minutes from Richmond City, VA. I began my interest in healthcare when I volunteered with my local fire department and rescue squad. I found a significant need in my community in which my neighbors needed desperate help; with staffing shortages, an all volunteer-based system, and remarkable response delays, the only way in which they could receive care was if I intervened. I obtained my Emergency Medical Technician Certification in my first semester of undergrad, enabling me to initiate basic life saving skills while transporting patients to the hospital." Micaiah's reflection is also an important reminder to thank your local first responders and EMTs! They continue to save lives everyday. 🚒 ❤️
