Invest in women. Improve the world.
About us
Founded over 20 years ago, Vital Voices turns the traditional model of development on its head with a simple mission: invest in women, improve the world. With deep, individualized investments, Vital Voices seeks out creative and fearless women leaders with daring vision and proven local solutions. We then partner with them to amplify that impact and create global change. The women leaders we work with can participate in skill-building and network development efforts in three key areas: • leadership development and global activation • economic empowerment and entrepreneurship • human rights and combatting violence against women These efforts come to life through our signature programs and individual, targeted investment approaches.

In a world that can feel overwhelming, it’s important to celebrate moments of progress. Welcome to the second edition of our weekly series: “𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤.” Swipe for this week’s highlights and keep reading for more information: 👇 1️⃣ Apple releases a trailer for Bread and Roses, a Malala-produced documentary highlighting the lives of Afghan women under Taliban rule. 2️⃣ A South Korean court recognizes misogyny as the motive in a hate crime, marking a breakthrough for women’s rights. The case involved a convenience store worker attacked by a man because of her short hair. 3️⃣ Adriana Brownlee, 23, from the UK, becomes the youngest woman to climb all 14 of the world’s highest peaks. 4️⃣ Ruth Chepngetich sets a new women’s marathon world record, running nearly two minutes faster than the previous one. 5️⃣ Canada’s parliament passes a bill covering the full cost of contraception, a move praised as a “historic achievement” for women’s rights. 6️⃣ In line with this month’s United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of 𝐙𝐞𝐫𝐨 𝐇𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫, we’re highlighting Leah Lizarondo, our Vice President of Global Network and founder of 412 Food Rescue and Food Rescue Hero. Last night, Vital Voices Global Partnership co-hosted an inspiring event, 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐕𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞, in collaboration with Argent , ELLE Magazine, and When We All Vote. 🗳️ Held at our Global Headquarters, this impactful evening brought together trailblazing women for a powerful discussion on civic engagement and the importance of voting. The event kicked off with remarks from our President Alyse Nelson, Sali Christeson (Founder & CEO, Argent ), and Beth Lynk (Executive Director, When We All Vote), followed by a dynamic panel, featuring: - Brittany Packnett Cunningham (Activist, Educator & Writer) - Olivia Julianna (She/Her)(Abortion Rights Activist) - Symone D. Sanders Townsend (Host, MSNBC’s "The Weekend") - Moderator: Sara Austin (Executive Editor, ELLE Magazine) With 2024 being such a crucial year, the message was clear: every vote counts, and every voice matters. Whether it's pushing for reproductive rights, racial justice, or economic equity, showing up at the ballot box is one of the most powerful ways to shape the world we want to see. Let’s continue to harness the momentum from this event, ensuring that we show up for ourselves, our communities, and future generations. If you haven’t yet, check your voter registration, make a plan, and use your vote as your voice this election season. 🗳️ #WhenWeAllVote #WomenLead #DemocracyInAction #YourVoteMatters

Last Friday, October 11th, we proudly hosted our first 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐫𝐥 𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭 at our headquarters! We welcomed 20 high school girls for a full day of panels, workshops, and mentoring, all aimed at empowering the next generation of female leaders. A big thank you to the Washington Spirit for joining us and providing life skills and mentoring sessions to students from District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) and Anacostia Senior High School. Their partnership helped equip these young women with the tools and confidence to lead and drive change in their communities. #InternationalDayOfTheGirl is a vital moment to focus on the unique challenges girls and women around the world face—whether it's access to education, leadership opportunities, or economic empowerment. This month, we’re continuing to celebrate the International Day of the Girl by showcasing the work of our Rising Voices Fellows, who are driving change in their communities. We also partnered with Working Films to host 𝐁𝐞𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐬: 𝐖𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧 𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 𝐅𝐢𝐥𝐦, showcasing female filmmakers using their work as a powerful medium for social justice. On this day in 2017, the #MeToo movement went viral, empowering millions worldwide to speak out against sexual harassment and assault. We’re proud to recognize Nika Kovač, our 2024 Global Leadership Awards honoree, who brought the #MeToo movement to Slovenia. Nika’s work, including co-founding the 8 March Institute, has driven major victories, like the "yes-means-yes" consent law and her ongoing EU campaign to ensure accessible abortion rights. Last year, at our Global Leadership Awards, Nika was honored by Tarana Burke, the founder of the #MeToo movement, for her extraordinary contributions to advancing gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights in Slovenia. #MeToo has not only exposed systemic injustice but also empowered millions to demand change. It’s a reminder that when women speak up, they have the power to reshape laws, challenge harmful norms, and build a more equitable world. At Vital Voices Global Partnership, we are committed to supporting women leaders who fight for justice, equality, and the rights of women and girls worldwide. The work of activists like Nika shows that progress is possible, even in the face of deeply entrenched inequalities.

In a time when the world feels heavy, we are proud to launch a new series: "𝐈𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐞𝐰𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤." Amid so much global hardship, there are stories of resilience and progress that deserve to be highlighted. Swipe for uplifting updates. 👇 More information: • The Court of Justice of the European Union has ruled that Afghan women can seek asylum based solely on gender and nationality, a necessary lifeline as the Taliban continues to strip away women’s rights. • Han Kang is the first South Korean author to win The Nobel Prize in literature, and only the 18th woman out of the 117 prizes awarded since 1901. • Mattel, Inc. has released its first-ever “Barbie Diwali doll” in an homage to the Hindu holiday of Diwali. • Jessica Campbell has made ice hockey history by becoming the first woman to coach a game in National Hockey League (NHL) history. • The UK is developing the world’s first vaccine for ovarian cancer at the University of Oxford. • Ireland is making Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) free for all women, recognizing the financial burden many women face in managing menopause symptoms. • Legendary tennis player and women's rights advocate Billie Jean King became the first individual female athlete to be awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, a high honor given by Congress to people who have made outstanding contributions to American society • For the first time in 173 years, the America's Cup will include an all-female sailing competition, marking a milestone in women’s sports. ✨ These stories remind us that while change may be slow, progress continues even in the most difficult times. "We have watched in absolute horror as the violence in Lebanon, Palestine, Israel, and the entire region moves into a dangerous new phase," said our President, Alyse Nelson. The Vital Voices Crisis Response Team is mobilizing to provide urgent assistance through our network of women leaders and women-led organizations in the escalating conflict now impacting Southern #Lebanon. In the last 72 hours, we’ve been working with women leaders and partner organizations to rapidly deploy funds directly to those on the frontlines, ensuring critical support reaches communities in need. Women, often disproportionately impacted by conflict, play a vital role in delivering immediate, life-saving assistance. Our Crisis Team is focused on providing flexible support, including safe relocation, health services, and urgent livelihood assistance for women leaders and activists, especially in Beirut, a key hub for human rights defenders.
