What’s one of the best things you can do for your mental health? Get moving. Mental health is part of a broader health picture. While this can make tackling a range of interrelated behaviours challenging, it also offers a chance to improve overall wellbeing through a holistic approach. Physical activity has consistently shown to help with mental health conditions. People who do a healthy amount of physical activity each week have a 50% lower rate of depression compared to those who don’t. Data from the Vitality Habit Index reveals that people with high levels of physical activity experience a 17% improvement in future psychiatric risk. What’s more, individuals who maintain 3 or more physical activity days per week gain one month of extra sleep in a year relative to individuals without this habit. Adequate sleep is essential for mental wellbeing It’s clear that increasing physical activity leads to better mental health outcomes. The increase doesn’t have to be drastic – every step you take and every move you make contributes to a healthier, more resilient mind. #LiveLifeWithVitality #MentalHealth #PhysicalActivity #HealthyHabits

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the World Health Organisation, 2.3 million women globally were diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022, making it the most common cancer in women worldwide. The good news is that advancements in early detection, screening methods and cancer treatments have led to a 42% decline in breast cancer death rates between 1989 and 2021. Early diagnosis, through regular screenings like mammograms, improves survival rates. Why? Because the cancer can be treated in its initial stages when it’s most manageable. Vitality encourages members to complete regular screenings, rewarding and incentivising them for both knowing and improving their health. And our approach has proven impact. Vitality engagement reduces cancer claims across both mortality and disability claims. Data from Vitality UK has shown that engagement with the Vitality programme reduced the cost of cancer care by almost 37%. What's more, we have seen that members who are more physically active have a higher likelihood of cancer survival. Our data from South Africa has shown that Vitality members who are more active before their diagnosis have 48% higher survival rates for breast cancer. Reducing your risk starts with making your health a priority, through regular screenings and increased physical activity. What will you do today? #LiveLifeWithVitality #BreastCancerAwareness #BreastCancerAwarenessMonth

Did you know that Vitality members in the UK took part in 1.4 million mindfulness sessions in 2023 alone? Vitality’s approach to mental health is anchored on the principle of meeting members where they are by offering solutions that cater specifically to the severity of the mental health condition at hand, using a tiered approach. There’s strong evidence that Vitality interventions are playing a key role in improving members’ mental health. Our UK data reveals that between 2019 and 2023, Talking Therapies claims rose by 179%, while in-patient mental health claims decreased by 69%. This indicates that Talking Therapies are playing a key role in treating members’ mental health conditions when they arise. #LiveLifeWithVitality #MentalHealth #TalkingTherapies

Ever heard of the “human energy crisis”? This term describes the significant imbalance in personal or collective energy that impacts wellbeing, productivity, and quality of life. It’s a hot topic in discussions about mental health, work-life balance, and the demands of modern life. Many people today experience chronic fatigue, burnout, and stress due to high workloads, long hours, and constant connectivity. This exhaustion impacts their ability to perform effectively and maintain a healthy lifestyle. The line between work and personal life has blurred for many, making it tough for individuals to recharge and disconnect from work-related demands. This imbalance can drain energy reserves and negatively impact mental health. Plus, the pressure to meet expectations, coupled with the challenge of managing personal responsibilities and societal pressures, can lead to emotional strain and diminished mental resilience. When energy levels are low, productivity and creativity can suffer. This creates a cycle where reduced effectiveness leads to even greater stress and energy depletion. On a larger scale, organisations and societies that ignore the human energy crisis may see higher rates of absenteeism, turnover and decreased overall effectiveness. Addressing this crisis means promoting practices that support mental health and wellbeing, such as encouraging regular breaks, fostering a supportive work environment, emphasising work-life balance, and providing resources for managing stress and recovery. Recognising and valuing personal energy management is crucial for maintaining overall health and productivity. #LiveLifeWithVitality #HumanEnergyCrisis #MentalHealth #WorkplaceWellness

Are you truly ‘present’ at work, or just physically showing up? Let’s talk presenteeism in the workplace. Presenteeism refers to the problem of employees being present at work but, because of illness or other medical conditions, not fully functioning. While some causes of presenteeism are physical ailments, a large contributor is mental health issues. This results in presenteeism often going undetected, making it difficult for managers and employers to fully quantify the effects of poor health on employees’ performance. On average, 50.6 days are lost to absenteeism and presenteeism, with presenteeism costing US companies an estimated $150 billion annually. It’s clear that ignoring workplace mental health comes at a steep cost to employers. The case for prevention is exceptionally compelling, as every $1 invested in mental health prevention services yields between $2 and $10 in savings. What’s more, eliminating unnecessary emergency care use for mental illness could save companies around $4.6 billion annually. How will you start investing in your employees’ mental health at work? #LiveLifeWithVitality #Workplace #MentalHealth
